Applications are invited for the position of Senior Anatomical Pathology Technician (APT).

Mortuary services for North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust and, South Tees NHS Foundation Trust, are provided collaboratively between the two Trusts.

The post holder will work alongside colleagues at both Trusts to provide an effective and efficient mortuary service.

The successful applicant will be hold the RSPHLevel 4 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology ( or evidenced equivalent qualification and /or experience) andhave extensive knowledge of routine and specialised post mortem dissection and reconstruction techniques.

The post holder is required to participate in the mortuary out of hours rota enabling appropriate cover for both North Tees and South Tees mortuaries.

**The post holder will**:

- participate as part of a team in providing Mortuary and Post Mortem Services to South Tees NHS Foundation Trust, North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, HM Coroners, Funeral Directors and other legitimate users of the service.
- assist the manager to coordinate the activities of staff and oversee the day to day management of the technical team.
- ensure resources are deployed to maximum effect to comply with local and national protocols.
- ensure that documentation and records are created accurately and kept appropriately.
- assist in the maintenance and development of the mortuary quality system including production and review of standard operating protocols (SOPs), training, development and competency assessment of other mortuary staff and completion of audits.
- provide specialist advice to users of the service within and out with the Trust in a manner commensurate with the sensitive nature of the work.
- work across Trusts and sites as required: Post mortems are currently undertaken at James Cook Mortuary and the post holder is required to undertake non post mortem mortuary duties at all NTH and STH sites.
- provide advice and support and training to staff within both Trusts.
- participate in the mortuary out of hours rota enabling appropriate cover for both NTH and STH mortuaries.
- assume the lead role for a designated area of work eg; traceability, Quality

**Key relationships**:
Work closely with Trust consultant histopathologists, trainee SPR, external forensic pathologists and local Coroners Services to enable the provision of a high quality and responsive mortuary service undertaking hospital consented and post mortems as directed by the Coroner

Work directly with funeral services to receive and return patient’s into their care so funeral arrangements can proceed

Communicate effectively with other Pathology departments to organise histological, toxicology or blood testing required on patient samples.

Liaise with hospital staff and directly with relatives of the patient to arrange and conduct viewings

Work closely with Bereavement Services to ensure patients can be released promptly

**Core functions**:
Produce work rotas in conjunction with the mortuary manager to support delivery of services

Manage day to day activities within the Mortuary

Participate in allocated work rotas carrying out designated duties and techniques in accordance with departmental standard operating procedures, Trust Policies, HTA and UKAS standards and all relevant legislation

To participate unsupervised in all technical post mortem procedures assisting pathologists internal and external to the trust

Receive and release patients in accordance with standard operating procedures ensuring accurate completion of Mortuary Register.

Collect, preserve and dispatch post mortem samples to other departments or establishments ensuring accurate records are maintained.

Use the mortuary vehicle, as and when required, to transport patients and relevant medical records required from the holding Hospital site to The James Cook University Hospital for post mortem or between other sites to maintain body s
