**Job Purpose**

Support the University within the multiple sclerosis and neuroinflammation research group, carrying out supporting work, providing advice, guidance and support, and leading projects within this area.
- **Duties and Responsibilities**

**Key Duties**
- To conduct clinically relevant research within multiple sclerosis and neuroinflammation and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for funding, publishing in national academic journals and conferences, and the recruitment and supervision of postgraduate research students.
- To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals.
- To undertake administrative tasks associated with the research project, including the planning and organisation of the project and the implementation of procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting.
- To engage with research partners, including patients, patient and representative groups to develop and promote research activities.
- To recruit patients onto related clinical trials and to develop real world data to support analysis of long-term outcomes in multiple sclerosis and other neuroinflammatory diseases.
- To collect relevant biological samples including blood and cerebrospinal fluid via venepuncture and lumbar puncture.
- To register for and undertake a PhD or MD in a suitable area as agreed.
- To disseminate research findings using appropriate and effective national and international publications, research seminars, meetings and conferences.
- To communicate research to a wide-ranging audience (public, clinicians and academic) through public engagement activities.
- To build and create networks both internally and externally to the university, to influence decisions, explore future research requirements, and share research ideas for the benefit of research projects.
- To review and synthesise existing research and clinical literature within the field.
- To participate in School research activities.

- Perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role.

**Person Specification**

**Essential Criteria**

1. Qualified medical practitioner and full GMC registration with licence to practice.
- 2. Substantial experience in working within neurology and/or neuroinflammatory disease.
- 3. Ability to demonstrate professional knowledge within specialist discipline to include expertise in the following areas:

- a. Neurology
- b. Multiple sclerosis and neuroinflammation
- 4. Analytical skills - able to analyse and present complex data, in a range of formats to a variety of audiences.
- 5. Ability to communicate conceptually detailed and complex information effectively and professionally with a wide range of people (clinicians and non-clinicians).
- 6. Demonstrate the capability and drive to succeed in securing research funding.
- 7. Proven ability to develop networks in order to contribute to long term developments.
- 8. Aspiration to an academic clinical career and willingness to register for a higher degree (PhD/MD or equivalent).
- 9. Evidence of ability to undertake and deliver specific projects and supervise short term project teams.
- 10. Experience of giving presentations at conference/meetings.
- **Desirable Criteria**

11. MRCP.
- 12. Experience of recruiting to clinical trials.
- 13. Fluency in Welsh, written and oral.
