Global Anaesthesia Fellow

One clinical Fellow post is available for an initial 12 months, which may be extended by mutual arrangement. Applicants are welcomed from a background in anaesthesia at ST7 level, or post-CCT: the Fellowship will be tailored according to experience.
Successful applicants will have one day per week dedicated to non-clinical global anaesthesia work.
The clinical sessions will be agreed with the clinical lead and will form the basis of the Fellowship job plan. The following programme sets out the basic requirements of the Fellowship, the details to be negotiated and agreed with the post holder prior to commencement of the post.
**Post Duration**: 12 months
**Hours: 48 Hours/week**:
**18 hours /week**: Fellowship activities including training lists, pre-operative assessment and non-clinical activities,
**Up to 30 hours / week**: Provision of anaesthesia across the three clinical sites, and Out-of-hours work.
The post holder has to be able to participate in the senior trainee on-call rota across all working sites. The timing of on-calls may be factored into the job plan.
Annual and study leave arrangements must be coordinated within the department to ensure there is an acceptable level of clinical cover.
**It is expected that they will undertake the following**:
1. A structured project relevant to global anaesthesia. The topic will be chosen by mutual agreement with the programme supervisor based on the Fellow’s experience and existing ideas / interests.
2. Active involvement with the Oxford Global Surgery Group (an active interdepartmental collaboration including surgeons, anaesthetists and obstetricians)
This fellowship is in affiliation with and supported through OxSTaR, the Oxford Centre for Simulation, Teaching and Research (Director: Prof. Helen Higham). OxSTaR is the University of Oxford’s medical simulation centre providing innovative training in technical and non-technical skills to health care professionals from all backgrounds and a research focus on Human Factors in healthcare.
The clinical commitment comprises the remainder of the job plan and will include on-call commitments determined by the experience of the fellow. Where possible clinical work will encompass areas of particular relevance to global health (obstetric, paediatric, trauma and emergency anaesthesia).
DELIVERY OF TRAINING
The training targets will be achieved using several training methods.
IndividualTrainingPlan To focus on the specific needs of the individual within the framework of the post.
SupervisedClinicalPractice The majority of training will take place at the Churchill Hospital. The fellow will be supervised by a Consultant, the level of responsibility being increased with experience according to the trainee’s progress.
Morbidity & Mortality Meetings Fellows are expected to attend departmental academic half-days which involve M&M reviews. A range of other surgical M&M meeting are available and fellows are encouraged to attend.
Academic Department Meetings These are held four or more times a year.
Mentor The Fellow will be offered a personal mentor.
Appraisal&Assessment Appraisals will be conducted by the Clinical Supervisor
on a regular basis. A formal assessment of the training will take place at the end of the attachment.
Log Book The Fellow will be expected to maintain a log book along Royal College of Anaesthetists guidelines.
Study Leave The Fellow will be encouraged to attend appropriate meetings.
Clinical
The post-holder’s duties will cover in and out-of-hours duties across all three sites.
Teaching/Research
Opportunities for teaching, training and research will be available within the fellowship programme and will be agreed prior to commencement of the fellowship.
Clinical Governance
The post-holder will participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.
Personal and Professional Development
The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs.
Management
The post-holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust.
