Macmillan Cancer Support Worker
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 support worker to work within the friendly and supportive Paediatric Oncology Aftercare team. You will work closely with the Medical team and the Band 7 CNS supporting and signposting young people and adults with the physical and psychological late effects of their childhood cancer treatment.
The successful applicant should have previous support worker experience, ideally in paediatric oncology.
The successful applicant will need to be very organised, thorough and hard working; have excellent communication skills and be able to work autonomously as well as within the wider Aftercare team. They will need to be empathic and be able to support the aftercare patients with health promotion and mental health issues.
They must also have extensive experience of providing holistic care as will be required to complete holistic needs assessments for the Aftercare patients.
Experience of running outpatient clinics would also be beneficial as the applicant will be responsible for the organisation and smooth running of the aftercare clinics.
Previous applicants need not apply.
Although cure rates for all forms of cancer in childhood have shown significant improvement in recent years, it is recognised that there is a ‘cost’ to cure and that many survivors have actual or potential health and related problems in adult life. Continuing care for young adult survivors of cancer in childhood is provided from specialised Aftercare clinics run at BRHC and the Bristol Haematology & Oncology Centre. These clinics support patients treated within the Southwest regional paediatric or Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) oncology service.
This post is 34 hours per week although working hours will need to be flexible. The post holder will be based both in the paediatric oncology day unit and outpatient suite (Oncology Day Beds) on the 6 th floor of BRHC.
You will participate as a member of the multidisciplinary Aftercare team (MDT) led by a consultant in paediatric oncology with special expertise in the late effects of childhood cancer. The team currently includes amongst its core membership a second paediatric oncologist, a clinical nurse specialist (CNS), a paediatric endocrinologist and an adult endocrinologist, and has the support of the paediatric haematology oncology MDT coordinator
For a more detailed job description and main responsibilities, please refer to the job description document attached to this vacancy.
