This is an exciting opportunity foranInfant Feeding Specialist Secondment until April 2025.

The role involves working collaboratively with colleagues in other agencies/Trusts to ensure provision of an integrated infant feeding service. This includes working with the Start for life programme team and being a member of the National Infant Feeding Network and attending regular meetings across the Healthy Child Programme Service, South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust and the Region.

The post holder will assist in the Start for life delivery plan and outcome's, developing new initiatives and focusing on areas with low breastfeeding rates gathering intelligence and data.

The Infant Feeding Team have been established in Coventry for a number of years and are embedded into the structure of the family health and lifestyle service within SWFT.

The small but friendly and successful team offer research based information during pregnancy and infant feeding support and guidance from birth and beyond. The breastfeeding rates in Coventry are increasing thanks to the excellent care new mothers receive and have recently been awarded the prestigious UNICEF baby friendly Achieving Sustainability Gold award.

The post holder will be expected to work closely with the Infant Feeding Coordinator, Infant Feeding Team and wider teams within the Health Visiting service to develop the Infant Feeding Service, maintain UNICEF Baby Friendly Accreditation status, work towards the UNICEF Baby Friendly Achieving Sustainability Gold Award and increase breastfeeding rates across Warwickshire.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Act as a feeding specialist, participate in and promote innovative practice. Will be directly involved in providing advice and guidance in highly sensitive situations such as; supporting parents with a seriously ill baby, a baby with congenital abnormalities, a baby with faltering growth.

Hold Breastfeeding Support Groups to provide specialist information and advice.

Promote best practice that meets NMC Code of Professional Conduct and scope of professional practice.

Maintain a collaborative supportive relationship with patients emphasising individualised family care, patient autonomy and informed decision making.

Promote evidence based breastfeeding practices across the service and maintain standards required in a Baby Friendly community.

Accept responsibility for his/her own continuing professional growth and maintain registration on the relevant part of their professional register.

Be able to prioritise and plan work in unpredictable situations when there are regular interruptions and competing demands on their time, e.g. responding to emergencies, supporting staff coping in difficult situations.

Measurable Result Areas

Assist the Infant Feeding coordinator in the training, assessment and audit of staff in order to maintain full UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative Accreditation status and work towards the Achieving Sustainability (Gold) Award.

Day to day management of the Infant Feeding Team and volunteers, providing support and mentoring.

Participate in the orientation of new staff in relation to Infant Feeding.

Act as a clinical supervisor for students where required to support their learning.

Exercise autonomous professional responsibility within the boundaries of the post.

Be responsible for the planning and prioritising of own workload.

Develop and deliver training to the Volunteer Breastfeeding Peer Support Service.

Co-ordinate and supervise the volunteer and Breastfeeding Support workers.

Responsible for the co-ordination and smooth running of Breastfeeding Support Groups.

Home visits to new parents where necessary, at the request of parents, community midwives or health visitors to provide information and support around feeding as required.

Provision of telephone support for parents in the antenatal and postnatal period.

Provide antenatal workshops, group sessions and one-to-one sessions for parents as required.
