In terms of equipment and services offered, we're very luckly to have a PET CT scanner, to be replaced with an Omni 32 in the summer, 3 SPECT CT cameras, 2 of which are being replaced this year, one with a Starguide system. There is an onsite radiopharmacy, with a Gallium generator for PET imaging. We perform a range of molecular radiotherapy, including Lu-177 Dota and PSMA. We're also actively involved in research trials, as well as our own local research and innovation.

Applicants who are not registered with the HCPC will be conisdered if they are close to obtaining registration (e.g. on the STP training scheme), at a lower band until registration is achieved.

The job includes the following duties

  • Provide scientific expertise in Nuclear Medicine.
  • Supervise and perform all routine and specialist imaging and non-imaging nuclear medicine procedures. Provide clinical reports. Monitor quality, keep abreast of new developments and devise and implement new techniques associated with all aspects of the service.
  • Actively participate in the research and development program of the department, and in the teaching and training of other staff and students.
  • Implement a comprehensive commissioning and quality control program for complex imaging, computing and analysis equipment.

Main duties of the job

Act independently within clearly defined professional guidelines and departmental policies and procedures, referring to colleagues and head of Nuclear Medicine when appropriate. (Work is managed rather than supervised).

Provide scientific expertise in all aspects of the Nuclear Medicine service.

Liaise with medical staff, technologists, radioraphers, clinical scientists, support staff, service engineers and outside agencies to ensure the provision of an efficient and effective Nuclear Medicine service.

Undertake research and development activities including the organisation, performance and supervision of research projects and the presentation of findings in scientific journals and at regional and national scientific conferences. Keep abreast of new developments and devise and implement new techniques associated with all aspects of the service.

Plan, organise and implement a comprehensive equipment commissioning and quality assurance program for Nuclear Medicine equipment, taking responsibility for the safe use of complex and valuable (2.5M) imaging equipment. The programme has to be scheduled around equipment availability and must be regularly adapted according to clinical workload and breakdowns.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Participate in teaching, training and development activities of staff and students, including regular responsibility for the supervision of trainee clinical scientists and physics students.

Assess imaging and non-imaging study requests and, in accordance with the requirements of relevant ionising radiation regulations, use scientific judgement to assign appropriate acquisition protocols, taking into account the clinical question and patient status.

Participate in all aspects of radionuclide therapy services.

Supervise and perform radiopharmacy procedures within an aseptic laboratory and undertake duties that include the elution of radionuclide generators and the manufacture of radiopharmaceuticals suitable for patient administration. This requires highly developed physical skills including the manipulation of unsealed radioactive sources in syringes.

Provide the patient with a full explanation of the investigation while adhering to all written procedures covering such administrations and including patient identification, administered activity, pregnancy, breast feeding and restriction to the patients actions post administration.

Supervise and perform the acquisition, analysis and presentation of radionuclide images and non-imaging data. Assess quality of data and suggest improvements where necessary.

Interpret diagnostic test results.

Provide reports for imaging and non-imaging studies, and check reports given by other staff.

Propose and implement developments in the departments procedures and protocols in accordance with relevant legislation and produce and maintain documentation. Explain impact of changes to other staff (including staff outside Nuclear Medicine when appropriate).

Write new software for data analysis and presentation of results and maintain and improve existing software as specified by the head of Nuclear Medicine or Medical Consultants.

Assist with all aspects of the departments radiation protection commitments including giving radiation protection advice to patients, carers and staff, contamination monitoring and radioactive waste management and disposal.

Organise and coordinate CPD sessions suitable for all department staff and participate in appropriate training and development activities. Undertake CPD and maintain appropriate records suitable for an accredited scheme (IPEM/HCPC).
