The role is responsible to Defra’s Security Advisor for Protective Security and key stakeholders for the running, management and delivery of advice, guidance and technical solutions for Defra Group staff working overseas. You will be shaping departmental policy and the security function procedures to support this policy as well as communicating across Defra Group to ensure staff are aware of the policies, timelines and procedures. You will define processes, through work with the national technical authorities and Government Security Centres, and working with HR to make informed, risk-based judgements on a case-by-case basis.

We are a thriving and growing team of 60 people with lots of opportunity to get involved in different areas in the wider team.

**Responsibilities**
- Maintaining management information to identify trends and patterns which may indicate training, communications or policy gaps and produce key performance indicators and metrics. Identifying technical solutions and suitable training. Both will need to be justified by robust cost-benefit tested business cases.
- Liaising with the National Technical Authorities, UK Security Vetting, the Government Security Centres and likeminded Government Departments to ensure Defra’s policies are coherent with other government departments and aligned to changing risk factors.
- Working with the security function communications team and the internal departmental communications team to ensure that departmental staff members understand the requirements on them when travelling overseas and the timelines required.
- Providing assistance to the Technical Services team as a Deputy STRAP Security Officer (STRAPSO) and provide support to higher classification working.

**Skills and experience**
- Experience of providing an excellent level of customer service and be prepared to be creative in identifying workable, risk-based solutions in support of non-standard official travel overseas.
- Excellent communication skills and be able to provide succinct briefings and advice to colleagues at all levels of seniority, some of whom will have limited technical ability or knowledge.
- Experience in formulating, identifying and implementing improved systems and processes.
- Ability to plan and liaise across teams and functions in support of international event attendance and VIP travel.
- Membership of the Security Institute or equivalent experience and commitment to work towards qualification.
