With the scope of digital pathology, pathologists are now able to convert glass slides of patients’ tissue samples into digital slides that can be viewed and analysed on a computer. The Integrated Pathology Unit (IPU) runs one of the most advanced translational digital pathology operations in Europe and bridges the gap between science and patients within the scope of digital pathology, tissue hybridization and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. The IPU represents an opportunity to make a substantial impact to the way we understand, diagnose and characterize cancer. The IPU works with teams at The Royal Marsden, the ICR, international and national collaborators, research organizations and commercial partners. The current role offers the opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary group of clinical, scientific, and computational staff whose combined remit is to offer advanced pathology solutions to clinical research. The post holder will be required to prepare sections for a variety of pathology and molecular analysis, perform multiplex immunofluorescent immunohistochemistry with our automated slide staining platform, be responsible for clinical trial sample audit tracking, use digital slide scanners competently to the high QC level required for AI research, and general lab management duties. This is an exciting opening in a newly established group at the forefront of clinical and academic research located in the world-renown Royal Marsden Hospital.

Histopathology is the basis of cancer diagnosis and a critical part of cancer research. We are recruiting a highly motivated Research Assistant to support all aspects of histopathology related to a range of research projects as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the Integrated Pathology Unit. The role will work alongside a team of Biomedical Scientists and another Research Assistant.

The Integrated Pathology Unit is mainly based in the Centre for Molecular Pathology on the Sutton site of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust. However, the post holder may be required to perform duties at the Chelsea site, but most of the activities are expected to be carried out in the Centre for Molecular Pathology (CMP) in Sutton.

The holder of the post is expected to perform a variety of tasks that may include, but are not restricted to:

- Staining of pathology slides using manual and automated methodology
- Scanning of pathology slides stained using a variety of methods e.g. HE, IHC, mIF
- Annotation of pathology images
- Stitching of image files using image analysis software such as INFORM or HALO
- General data analysis

- To support projects by facilitating tissue-based techniques such as: - Tissue processing and embedding
- Microtomy and H&E preparation
- IHC and ISH validation
- IHC/IF Multiplexing

- To work under the supervision of the line manager and to consult where appropriate
- To quality control the slide preparation, image scanning and analysis workflow

- To produce work suitable for high-quality, high-impact publications
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with other laboratories in the institute and clinical colleagues
- To coordinate collaborations with industry
- To familiarise yourself with the BRC’s approach towards risk management including its policies and procedures, which require all staff to play an active part in identifying and managing risk.
