**Summary**:
UKHSA Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards (RCE) lies within the Science Group. RCE provides advice, research and services to protect the public from hazards resulting from exposure to chemicals and poisons, ionizing and non-ionising radiation, andother environmental hazards.
RCE’s Environmental Hazards and Emergencies (EHE) Department provides authoritative scientific advice to government, the NHS and other bodies about the public health effects of acute and chronic chemicals exposures and the impact of other environmental hazards.
**The EHE Department comprises**:

- Three geographically dispersed teams (North, Midlands, South) operating from nine locations providing specialist advice at local and national level on the public health impact of acute and chronic non-infectious environmental exposures.
- Two Groups: the Air Quality & Public Health, Noise & Health groups. Key activities include the provision of highly specialist advice on the health impacts of noise and air pollution nationally and internationally; research in these areas, including, butnot exclusively, through the National Institute of Health Research Health Protection Research Units. For the Air Quality & Public Health Group, provision of support to the Department of Health and Social care (DHSC) expert committee on the Medical Effectsof Air Pollutants (COMEAP).

The post holder, based in the Noise and Public Health (NPH) Group, will work with the team to support the objectives of UKHSA’s noise programme to develop and share the evidence base on noise and health, improve how information on the health impacts of noiseexposure are communicated; and encourage and support behaviour change at every level. The post holder will lead the behavioural and psychological science aspects of noise for UKHSA with guidance and support from UKHSA’s behavioural science experts.
The postholder will use their behavioural and social science expertise to support the development of evidence and provision of expert advice on how best to communicate information about the health impacts associated with noise pollution and the health impactsof interventions, taking into account ancillary public health benefits, working with internal and external partners. This is a technical role that is both internally and externally facing. This primarily includes behavioural and social survey analyses, interventionand evaluation design, evidence synthesis, report writing, training, presentations and policy briefings.
**Key Responsibilities:
**The main work will consist of supporting and, where agreed, leading on delivery of tasks including:

- Developing and reviewing the evidence base on the quantitative associations between noise and various health endpoints though literature reviews and meta-analyses
- Quantifying health impacts attributable to noise at a national, regional and local level through burden of disease and comparative risk assessments, including the evaluation of interventions
- Contributing to capacity building, communication and training, both internally and externally for developing and disseminating the evidence base for reducing the health impacts of noise.
- Contributing to research projects on noise and soundscapes as required and in collaboration with other UKHSA departments / directorates and external partners.
- Writing of, and contribution to, peer-reviewed publications related to the post holder’s area of scientific work.
- Support UKHSA staff in EHE dispersed Units and Health Protection Units in their role by providing advice on noise on a site, project and or problem-specific basis.
- Providing input to and reviewing appropriate consultation documents on government policy, issued by other agencies and government departments, on an ad hoc basis.
- Respond to requests from the Department of Health and Social Care, other Government departments, the public and other stakeholders for advice on the health effects of noise. This will encompass contributions for letters to the public, briefings and responsesto Parliamentary Questions.
- Ensuring all data/ information generated within the noise work programme is stored in an appropriate manner consistent with UKHSA’s information management policies.

**Essential Criteria**:

- Relevant PhD qualification in environmental epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental science or similar, or equivalent experience
- Research background in biostatistics or the use of epidemiological methods for non-infectious diseases, including epidemiological study design.
- Experience of undertaking systematic reviews and meta-analysis
- Experience of undertaking research and development
- Proficient in standard statistical software (e.g. STATA, SPSS), geographic information systems (GIS), statistical modelling, programming (particularly R)
- Ability to critically assess technical papers on behaviour and health and make judgements based on complex and uncertain information
- Capable of managing own workload and make informed decisions in the absence of required information, working to tight and often changing timescales
