Clinical Research Fellowships in Clinical Oncology

**Detailed job description and main responsibilities**:
**Clinical Training and Responsibilities (Clinical Oncology Posts)**:
- To assist in all aspects of the management of care of cancer patients, both inpatients and outpatients.
- To supervise ward junior staff in the above.
- To look after oncology patients and participate in the acute oncology service.
- To participate in the prescription of chemotherapy and evaluation of patients receiving chemotherapy.
- To attend radiotherapy planning meetings and radiotherapy planning sessions
- To participate in on call rota (currently 1b rota, frequency on call 1:12).
- To engage with the educational activities as outlined below.
**Clinical Training and Responsibilities (Proton Therapy Post)**:
- Provision of outpatient clinical care of PBT patients
- Reviewing patients in radiotherapy on-treat clinics
- Management of acute radiation/chemoradiation toxicities
- Timely review of unwell PBT patients and arrangement of emergency care and admission if required.
- Providing physical medical cover in GWB through all operational hours
- Liaising with consultant clinicians
- Attendance in MDT and pre-planning meetings
- Attendance in new and follow up outpatient clinics
- Supervised PBT radiotherapy planning and treatment plan evaluation
- PBT treatment verification/review of cone-beam CTs
- Completing end of treatment summaries
- Facilitating the collection of clinical outcomes
- Active involvement in research, audit or quality improvement projects. For example, involvement in technique development such as motion management and image guidance in PBT, implementation and delivery of clinical trials involving PBT.
- Medical Cover for Proton Therapy Department on Bank Holidays and some Saturdays
**Formal Education**
- There is a weekly hospital ‘grand round’ (60 minutes) in which teams from different departments take turns to present interesting cases with learning points.
- There is a weekly registrar peer group session (45 minutes) in which registrars take turns to present a topic which is then discussed.
- For each tumour type there is a multidisciplinary team meeting (usually weekly and of 60-90 minutes duration) at which patients are discussed, and pathology and imaging are reviewed, and treatment plans are agreed. While the primary purpose of these meetings is patient management, they are of very high educational content.
- Small group teaching is arranged on an individual basis to help in exam preparation, for example with medical physics.
- Weekly teaching for the registrars provided by the Physics department covering both basic applied physics as well as more complex techniques.
- A program of consultant led teaching is provided; these occur weekly, on Tuesday afternoons. All SpRs are expected to attend.
- Attendance at the Monthly department audit meeting is mandatory. These are multidisciplinary and trainees are encouraged to take an active role in the collection and presentation of audit.

**Knowledge and Qualifications**:
**Essential criteria**:
- Medical degree
- Membership of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent
- GMC registration and entry on the appropriate GMC Specialist Register
- Completed core medial training or equivalent
**Desirable criteria**:
- Knowledge of the Clinical Governance framework of the NHS (including Research governance) and understanding of current changes in the organisation and management structures of the NHS. Ability to act within these parameters
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists
**Experience**:
**Essential criteria**:
- Experience of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
- Clinical audit experience
**Desirable criteria**:
- Undergoing or completed higher specialist training in clinical oncology
- Experience in clinical oncolog
