**About the role**:

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the team at Tewkesbury Library as a Library Assistant. At Gloucestershire County Council, we are constantly challenging ourselves to improve the services we provide to the people of the county. We strive to support our local communities and all of those who live within them and the key to providing that service is the energy, skills and dedication of the people who works for us.

Library Assistants are the public face of the Library Service, you are responsible for ensuring that our users have access to all the services that the libraries provide. This will include helping them choose and issue books, maintaining the stock in the library, helping providing activities such as baby, bounce and rhyme, the library challenge for children and supporting springboard groups of older users. You’ll need to master the Library ICT systems and be able to offer basic advice on the use of computers and tablets to those who require it.

**Role and responsibilities**:

- Assist users to access all services provided at the library including the use of library equipment. Support the training of colleagues and volunteers for this purpose.
- Attend any and all training as required to meet the requirements of the NVQ training in order to successfully pass the NVQ.
- Maintain an awareness of customers’ needs, listening and responding to customer comments and complaints, referring those that you are not able to resolve to other colleagues or to your manager.
- Be aware of customer standards and service presentation standards and understand your role in meeting these.
- Maintain an awareness of changes in service, policy or processes and take ownership for delivering these within your libraries.
- Use the knowledge and experience gained from working with customers to contribute ideas for improving customer services and operational processes in your Locality.
- Carry out all routine clerical and administration tasks, including cash handling, to ensure Library services are delivered to customers effectively.
- To direct the day to day work of volunteers as designated by the Librarian Team Leader, and the Locality Librarian.
- Work co-operatively with colleagues from partner agencies, other council services or volunteers which share, work from or hire the Library.
- Participate in the service’s prioritised programme for outreach development to customers.
- Participate in the service’s prioritised programme of training and development.
- Be aware of and understand the objectives of the County Council and the service and how your work contributes to the achievement of these objectives and the “One Council” approach.

**About you**:
We are looking for a dynamic, positive and committed individual who will play a key role in the day to day operations and organisation of Tewkesbury Library. The successful applicant should have:

- Excellent and proven customer service experience.
- Be a team player with strong communication and organisational skills
- Have experience of working with or organising events for children
- Strong ICT skills
- Confident; promotional and selling skills
- A knowledge of the services libraries offer and the role libraries play in the community

**Special Conditions**:

- Driving licence or ability to arrange transport around the County as required by the job.
- Weekend and evening working.
- To be available to work at any library within the boundaries of the county council, when reasonably requested to do so.
