ART PSYCHOTHERAPIST - BAND 7

0.4 WTE (2 days a week), permanent

**BASE**: Kingswood Centre (Kenton Ward) and Park Royal Centre for Mental Health

**Post requirements**:
Qualified and registered Art Therapist.

Experience in adult mental health, specifically inpatient settings.

Evidence of Continued Professional Development since qualifying.

One of the working days needs to be a Thursday to support links with the wider arts psychotherapies service.

An exciting opportunity has emerged for a skilled and enthusiastic art psychotherapist to work across the acute and inpatient rehabilitation care pathways for the North West London Arts Psychotherapies Service.

The post holder will be required to plan, provide and develop an art therapy service for people needing inpatient mental healthcare at Park Royal Centre for Mental Health and Kenton Ward at Kingswood Centre. They will need to work closely with the inpatient multidisciplinary teams. Strong links should also be developed with other adult mental health services where patients are referred to.

The arts therapies service will include systematic assessment, treatment and evaluation of group and individual work using art-based therapeutic interventions. The post holder will also be required to manage and clinically supervise allocated staff, specifically arts therapies trainees, and regularly undertake arts therapies research/audit as part of the Trust Arts Therapies research strategy.

The post holder will be required to work autonomously and to manage a busy and complex caseload. Significant interest and experience of working with acute states of mind (psychosis, challenging behaviour) and complex emotional needs is required.

The successful applicant may have contact with patients or service users. As an NHS Trust we strongly encourage and support vaccination as this remains the best way to protect yourself, your family, your colleagues and of course patients and service users when working on our healthcare settings.

CNWL has a well-established Arts Therapies network with a large and diverse workforce providing art, dance-movement, drama and music therapy for adults with mental health needs across a variety of inpatient, outpatient and community services. The post holder will be linked to these services and will have access to CPD opportunities and clinical networks. Regular specialist clinical supervision and line management supervision is provided within the Trust.

To plan and develop a specialist arts therapies service for people with severe and enduring mental health problems on the acute and low secure wards at Park Royal Centre for Mental Health and the male inpatient rehabilitation ward at Kingswood.

To offer specialist treatment for those who would benefit from psychological therapy but find primarily verbal psychotherapy difficult to access (e.g. thought disorder, cognitive difficulties, emotional withdrawal, language problems, etc.)

To assess referred (self-referred) patients with respect to planning arts therapies treatment including inpatient/outpatient follow-up if appropriate, taking into account risk factors, and complexity of presentation, patients need, and service priorities.

To contribute specialist knowledge from your assessment and treatment to the overall care plan for each patient through contribution to clinical meetings (ward rounds, CPAs, tribunals) via written reports, as well as verbal feedback to the ward teams

To refer on to other appropriate services after assessment or on discharge

To work as an integrated team member of the multidisciplinary team, respecting others ways of working and having these others in mind when providing therapy.

To adapt your clinical practice to suit particular challenges of the environment without comprising therapeutic goals.

To use your clinical skills to contribute to the overall treatment goals for the client beyond arts therapies treatment where necessary and if appropriate and needed by the team, e.g. facilitation of reflective practice group, joint assessments and so on.

To assess risk and adopt appropriate measures to maintain a safe and therapeutically sensitive environment for all when faced with e.g. verbal abuse, deliberate self-harm or violence or aggressive or threatening behaviour.

To maintain a high degree of professionalism at all times and to maintain proper boundaries particularly as the clinical work will frequently involve working alone with individuals for substantial periods in emotionally intense therapy sessions, where behaviour might be unpredictable, potentially violent, disinhibited or where there may be poor self-care.

To undertake ongoing evaluations of patients' progress to manage time-limited therapy including therapy endings and follow up.

To seek out help of seniors or more experienced arts therapists in this field to enhance your clinical practice, possibly from sources within and outside the Trust, and to promulgate this knowledge through the arts
