**Job summary**:
The newly created Department for Business and Trade (DBT) oversees the domestic business environment, breaks down international barriers to trade and investment, and helps boost economic growth by ensuring the UK is a country where businesses can thrive. But we operate in an increasingly dynamic international environment, with a range of forces rapidly reshaping both the UK and global economy. For the UK to navigate this complex environment successfully, we need to understand how the world is changing.

To help guide DBT’s strategic thinking, the Global Futures Group - a ‘futures think-tank’ - sits at the heart of DBT within the Ministerial Strategy Directorate. We produce high-quality, well-evidenced and visually impactful strategic research around global trends and the impact on the UK economy. A recent example of the Group’s published work is DBT’s Global Trade Outlook.

Working in the ‘Foresight Team’, you will develop insights around how disruptive global trends - stemming from global science, technology, geopolitical and social developments - could shape the UK’s economic prospects over the next three decades. Forward-looking foresight work is critical for DBT to ensure that our strategies and policies are futureproofed to support the UK’s long-term prosperity. You will be involved in a diverse range of projects, all linked by a common theme of delivering on the Department’s priorities - for example, over the past year, projects delivered by the team range from the future of multilateralism to the role of science and tech in trade.

**Job description**:

- **Producer of engaging reports and presentations**- You will create eloquent, innovative and visually engaging reports that have impact with seniors. You will also be an articulate communicator - both on the page and in person - and be able to tailor your research and adapt your messaging to be relevant to a range of audiences.
- ** Project management and delivery**- You will help drive forward the portfolio of the Foresight team by proactively suggesting new areas of research and innovative project ideas. You will both lead and contribute to lead foresight projects, delivering at pace with autonomy and accuracy.
- **Collaborative working **- You will help boost the team’s influence by working with your teammates to engage the rest of DBT and ensure that the team’s strategic insights are embedded in the Department’s wider work.
- **Creating diverse stakeholder networks**- You will help develop and maintain the team’s network of contacts across Whitehall and experts outside government to inform our horizon scanning work. This includes: Building close relationships across DBT and Government, including with the Government Office for Science, Cabinet Office, FCDO, DSIT, DESNZ, MOD, and other bodies. Establishing networks with external stakeholders across industry and expert organisations.

**Person specification**:
We are looking for an innovative, articulate thinker who has a logical mind, is open to different ways of thinking and has a flair for interrogating quantitative and qualitative evidence to draw out original insights.

You will have excellent communication skills and be skilled at distilling complex issues into easily digestible and engaging material that resonates with senior stakeholders.

You will enjoy collaborative working and be keen to build a strong and productive network of contacts with stakeholders across DBT, Whitehall and outside Government, leveraging the team’s external networks where possible.

You will enjoy project work and be able to prioritise and work effectively across multiple projects simultaneously. You will also be comfortable working in a fast-paced policy-making environment and be able to flexibly adjust your work priorities in the face of emerging demands.

**Essential Criteria**
- Experience of analysing quantitative and qualitative data sources to produce research reports and presentations, preferably using visualisation techniques, that draw out insightful conclusions.
- Experience of delivering multiple pieces of work at pace.

**Desirable Criteria**
- Experience working with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Experience using forward-looking analysis to influence strategic decisions in a policy or corporate setting.
- A background in horizon scann
