What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?
BAT’s corporate purpose is to reduce the health impact of its business by offering a greater choice of enjoyable and less risky products. As BAT is accelerating its transformation into a truly multi-category consumer products business, consumer and product insights and foresights play a key role in the Combustibles and New Categories portfolios, including identifying and driving the opportunities to achieve the overall commercial objective of delivering £5 billion of revenue and profitability from New Categories by 2025 and 50 million consumers of non-combustible products by 2030.
Within Marketing Legal Counselling, the Legal Counsel is responsible for advising and supporting Global Consumer & Product Insights and Foresights (GCPIF), an expanding part of central marketing, and acting as a Centre of Expertise (CoE) to Regional, DRBU and End Market Legal and marketing teams, on legal aspects of BAT’s global consumer research and product insights and foresights activities, with a focus on Combustibles and New Category products (excluding Wellness & Stimulation).
The role is responsible for supporting Senior Counsel, I&F in delivering the legal advice and guidance to the GCPIF team and helping drive its global strategy and research plans.
The Legal Counsel is also expected to work effectively and collaboratively with Regional, DRBU and End Market Marketing Legal Counsels and wider Central Legal teams to provide strategic COE legal direction and guidance on key global consumer and product insights & foresights initiatives and projects.

Your key responsibilities will include:
Taking responsibility for the execution and delivery of key team and department objectives as allocated by the Senior Counsel. Providing legal support and advice relevant to the GCPIF function’s strategic direction, BAT consumer and product insights and foresights plans and projects, including identifying and mitigating legal risk in proposed and operational Marketing activities including responsible marketing, Market Research Guidelines, regulatory requirements, intellectual property, data privacy, consumer protection, competition and compliance risks. Working with the Senior Counsel, Head of Legal, Marketing and other Category Counsels (when required) providing guidance to the GCPIF teams to develop and implement innovative, comprehensive and cost-effective approaches and processes for the review, approval and implementation of consumer and product insights & foresights plans and projects taking into account research industry practices and protocols, business priorities and to provide alignment with evolving Group strategy. Providing commercially focused and pragmatic advice on key legal issues in a straightforward and compelling way business stakeholders, enabling the business to deliver results whilst handling legal and other risks; Educating business stakeholders and Legal colleagues, including delivering regular training and awareness sessions, to ensure understanding of key consumer and product marketing and research guidelines and practice which may impact on BAT Group strategy and research plans and reporting requirements; Developing and managing relationships with key external counsel and third-party research agencies to ensure high quality, efficient and value for money service, seeking efficiencies and opportunities for standardisation, simplification and automation where possible; Promoting risk management and a compliance culture with all collaborators Build a healthy, engaged, diverse and inclusive working environment within the wider Marketing Legal and Corporate Commercial teams. Professional qualification as a lawyer with at least 8 years’ post qualification experience of international corporate, commercial, consumer goods law, preferably including extensive in-house experience. Good knowledge and practical experience of product, marketing, consumer and product research laws, regulations and practice relating to New Categories and Combustibles products. Ability to devise and complete innovative, efficient and pragmatic approaches and processes for the review, approval and implementation of consumer and product insights & foresights plans and projects in support of the BAT Group strategy. Commercially astute with a clear understanding of CPG or marketing businesses and ability to understand and support strategic objectives and commercial plans. Combine a blend of legal expertise, emotional intelligence, and creative problem-solving. Ability to excel in collaboration, adaptability, and continuous learning, making them effective in building relationships and adding value. Excellent interpersonal skills, sound judgement, good decision making and the ability to advise and influence others. Skilled in engaging, communicating and presenting in a clear and coherent manner to commercial partners; Ability to operate across functions, building consensus and support where needed; High degree of self-motivation and ability to achieve defined and measurable results; Ability to work in a fast paced environment and to cope with unexpected and varied demands demonstrating prioritisation, pragmatic solution-orientated advice and sound commercial judgement; Ability to manage resources and budgets; Demonstrates a desire to learn and develop new skills.
