Bristol, United Kingdom University of Bristol Full time

**The role**:
This is an exciting opportunity for a Research Associate / Senior Research Associate position to join the Diverse-Ability Interaction Lab (Dive Lab), led by Dr Oussama Metatla, within the Bristol Interaction Group (BIG) at the University of Bristol.

In the Dive Lab, we study interactions between disabled and non-disabled people to design, engineer and evaluate technologies that support more inclusion in human society, spanning a wide range of groups, domains, and contexts, including visual impairments, neurodiversity, and cognitive and physical impairments in education, work, and leisure.

The postholder will join a multidisciplinary team working on the **_inclusiveXplay_** project, (supported by an ERC-selected Consolidator Grant, funded by UKRI), in which we are investigating how cross-sensory and embodied cognition can inform the design of novel technologies that can support early motor, cognitive and social development of blind and visually impaired (BVI) preschool-aged children when they interact with their sighted peers. The postholder will lead on the **cognitive** **science** aspects of the _inclusiveXplay_ project: to empirically study cross-sensory perception in BVI and sighted children, to characterise cross-sensory correspondences between sensory modalities (visual, auditory, haptic, olfactory and gustatory), and to produce fundamental insights into BVI and sighted children’s potential shared cross-sensory cognition.

**What will you be doing?**:
You will study cross-sensory cognition in BVI and sighted children by extending existing cross-sensory paradigms of symbolic transformations and communication across sensory modalities.

This will include employing controlled experiments grounded in experimental psychology and cognitive science to address questions such as: What are cross-sensory correspondences between sensory symbolic stimuli in BVI and sighted children? Are there natural cross-sensory correspondences that are shared between BVI and sighted children? And how are these cross-sensory correspondences impacted by stimuli form factors such as shape change?

This will contribute new knowledge to the growing body of literature on crossmodal correspondences and their potential for multisensory and accessible human-computer interaction.

You are interested in understanding cross-sensory cognition in BVI and sighted pre-school aged children, and in collaborating with interaction designers, engineers, and human-computer interaction experts, to:

- Lead the study of cross-sensory correspondences across a wider range of sensory modalities in BVI and sighted individuals.
- Design, plan and execute controlled experiments of cross-sensory cognition.
- Collect and analyse data characterising cross-sensory correspondences.
- Translate findings into insights that can feed into other **_inclusiveXplay_** project activities, e.g., co-design activities, and engineering of cross-sensory shape-changing interfaces.
- Write up and submit research findings to top publication venues
