**Job description**:
The Department for Transport is a high-profile department at the heart of Government and its communications team delivers quality communications that support ministerial and government priorities on key transport policies that impact peoples’ day-to-day lives.
Your role will be to ensure the smooth running of the DfT Communications team, working with and advising the Group Director and the senior management team. The role will be fast paced and varied, managing multiple competing priorities at once, reflecting the nature of the work of the DfT Communications team. You will work with colleagues from across the communications directorate including Media, Marketing, Strategic Communications, Digital, External Affairs and Internal Communications.
You will have responsibility for supporting and advising senior board-level discussions, using your initiative to evolve this in line with stakeholder requirements and business need.
You will also be responsible for the business support function for the directorate, leading the team responsible for delivering core corporate processes including finance/ budget management, workforce, IT, recruitment support and procurement.
This role will suit someone who enjoys working in a fast-paced and flexible environment. You will demonstrate strong initiative and creativity to drive improvements to planning and coordination within and across Communications.
**Responsibilities**
**_ _**_Include, but not limited to:_**
- Key adviser to Director of Communications (DoC) and senior management team on critical issues concerning Group Communications for DfT.
- Manage the corporate team of up to four people, providing direction and leadership to ensure effective management of finance, contract management, workforce, recruitment, risk, security and executive support, as well as developing them as part of the talent pipeline.
- Produce, review and advise on briefings, papers, presentations and correspondence for the Director as required, supported by the business support team.
- Provide strategic and secretariat support to Senior Leadership Team meetings, including weekly Heads of Department meeting and Quarterly Group Communications Board, and ensuring actions are captured and implemented so that corporate responsibilities are met.
- Be a key point of contact for the directorate and build strong relationships across communications, the department and across government, including senior officials’ and Ministerial private offices.
- Provide other support to the DoC and senior management team, depending on business need.

**Person specification**:
As the Head of Office & Private Secretary to the Group Director of Communications, you will have the drive, enthusiasm, organisational and people skills that means you can hit the ground running in the fast-paced and supportive Communications Directorate. You will have a track record of leading teams, advising senior leaders and providing advice to improve the functioning of a Directorate.
You will have great communication skills and an ability to communicate clear messages to others while ensuring you tailor your message to suit your audience. You can build rapport quickly with others as you develop effective working relationships with both colleagues and stakeholders.
You will demonstrate strong initiative and creativity to drive improvements to planning and coordination within and across Communications. You will have excellent time management skills, being able to prioritise multiple conflicting priorities and deliver against tight deadlines, while ensuring your work is of a high quality.
**Additional Information**
A minimum **60%** of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.
