The state of the art Critical Care Unit (CCU) at The Royal Marsden facilitates the provision of exceptional treatment and care to patients throughout critical phases of their cancer journey.

The 19 bed CCU on the Chelsea site is the only level 3 critical care facility dedicated entirely to cancer patients in the United Kingdom and boasts some of the best survival rates for critically ill haemato-oncology patients in Europe.

The Medicines Management Assistant is a role in our CCU at the Royal Marsden Hospital. We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated, and energetic individuals to support safe medicines management and stock maintenance in the Critical Care Services.

This job would be excellent for those who aspire to working in healthcare and are curious about the variety of jobs on offer. The post is based at the Chelsea site of the Royal Marsden Hospital. Experience of stock management in either a community or hospital pharmacy would be desirable but not essential.

The successful post holder will also have the opportunity to be enrolled onto the NVQ Pharmacy Level 2 course via the apprenticeship program which will prepare you with the essential knowledge required in safe medicines management. It is also a good way to progress if you wish to have a future career within pharmacy.

The principal role of this post holder is to assist in the technical aspects surrounding the safe and secure storage of medication and fluids within the critical care unit (CCU), and high dependency unit (HDU) at The Royal Marsden Hospital (NHS Foundation Trust).

The post holder will be responsible for various technical duties with regards to medication storage, including managing the automated drug cupboards on CCU and HDU. The post holder will also have the opportunity to participate in various pharmacy clinical service duties, whilst under the supervision of the CCU Medicines Management Technician.

General
- To gain experience and understanding of the procedures for stock ordering, rotation, distribution and stock control
- To ensure own actions reduce risks to health and safety and to promote a health and safety culture within the workplace
- To gain an understanding of the policy around safe and secure storage of medicines
- To communicate effectively with all staff (Critical Care, and Pharmacy) and patients/relatives you come in contact with
- To demonstrate an understanding of infection control issues by attending mandatory training; understand infection control policy and procedure, accept responsibility for own infection control practice and be willing to challenge others’ practice
- To foster people’s equality, diversity and rights

Critical Care Unit, High Dependency Unit and Clinical Pharmacy Services
- To become familiar with the CCU and HDU computer system for the automated drug cupboard
- To receive and refill the automated cupboards when stock is delivered from pharmacy
- To liaise with pharmacy stores and pharmacy technicians in highlighting the need for ordering further pharmacy stock for CCU or HDU
- To carry out regular stock checks of fluids, controlled drugs and other medication to ensure stock levels are correct
- To participate in controlled drug audits and other audit work
