**About Agri Food Chain**

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Agri-Food Chain Directorate in Defra. The Directorate leads on a diverse and exciting range of food and farming policy, working closely with industry, academia, the voluntary sector and consumer groups, as well as almost every other Whitehall department.

While continuing to respond to the current challenges to the farming and food systems, we are also developing new policies for UK food and farming to make the most of our opportunities as an independent, sovereign state by improving the innovation, productivity and economic performance of our domestic industries. We want to make the UK the best in the world when it comes to maintaining the confidence of consumers, high food standards and innovative, sustainable food production in a way that fits the Government’s commitment to achieve Net Zero in 2050. **About the Food Security and Coordination Team**

The Covid pandemic and the invasion of Ukraine have clearly demonstrated the importance of an effective agri-food supply chain, highlighting both the vulnerabilities in the system, but also the ability of the system to respond dynamically. Defra’s Food, Biosecurity and Trade Director General (DG) Group leads on the main policy areas related to food security. The Agri-Food Chain directorate sits within this Group and takes the lead on domestic food security-related policy. The Food Security and Coordination division is responsible for managing risks and future-proofing aggregate food supply and imports, so that there is sufficient food for the nation now and in the future.

**Job description**:
The Domestic Production and Trade team sits within the Food Security and Coordination division and is made up of three sub teams:
Food Security Report Team - to deliver UK Food Security Report by Dec 2024.

Domestic Production Team - to ensure that the broader, non-trade, domestic policy landscape (e.g. Future Countryside Programme, environment and climate objectives, land use) contributes to a sustainable and secure agri-food supply chain.

Trade Impacts Team: to ensure that international trade contributes to sustainable and secure agri-food supply chain, and manage Tariff Rate Quota (TRQ) policy and administration.

The policy advisor role is within the Trade Impacts team. In this role, you will support work across two distinct areas - Food Security and TRQ Administration. You will be responsible for driving forward evidence-based policy development, working with stakeholders within and outside Government, supporting trade negotiations, and providing advice and briefing to senior leaders and ministers. You will also be expected to contribute to cross cutting work and projects within and beyond the Directorate.

**Responsibilities**
- Understanding a range of different policies relating to food security, and the connections or tensions between them.
- Planning and prioritising effectively to deliver high quality results to time, helping to identify and manage risks within projects.
- Compiling and submitting World Trade Organisation (WTO) notifications
- Monitoring of TRQ fill rates from food security and supply perspective.
- Producing high quality written submissions and briefings, including for senior officials and Ministers.
