**ROLE TITLE - Hospital/Community Breastfeeding Peer Supporter**

**HOURS - 12**

**RATE OF PAY - £9.50**

**INTRODUCTION**

To work with health professionals to deliver a seamless approach to breastfeeding support within the local community on completion of accredited breastfeeding peer support training.

Families and Babies work within culturally diverse areas, with a high proportion of families living in areas of deprivation. The post holder will work with relevant partners to ensure that Families and Babies is accessible to these and other population groups, vulnerable to health inequalities and are able to provide true peer to peer support.

**MAJOR OBJECTIVES OF THE PEER SUPPORT ROLE**
- To work closely with the midwives, health visitors and other health professionals and provide early days breastfeeding peer support and evidence based information to mothers on the maternity wards, birth centres, delivery suites or neonatal unit.
- To continue to offer breastfeeding peer support and evidence based information to mothers at home visits up to week 3 and by telephone or text thereafter up to week 6.
- To ensure that proper FAB policies and procedures are observed and that service users and health care professionals are received in a friendly and professional manner.
- To contribute to the Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme.
- Prepared to work flexibly to cover the whole of Lancashire which may include evenings and weekends as and when required.
- Commitment to personal development through supervision, training, appraisal and study.

**PEER SUPPORT RESPONSIBILITIES**

**In General**
- To communicate effectively with the Locality Manager and office staff regarding your role, caseload and rota.
- To complete paperwork relating to Families and Babies and keeping the Locality Manager or office staff informed of your whereabouts and activities at all times.
- To complete weekly timesheets by agreed deadlines.
- To recognise the importance of data protection and maintaining confidentiality at all times.
- To attend regular team meetings and support and supervision sessions.
- To take an active role in your own development; to maintain and update appropriate skills and be willing to undertake additional training where appropriate.
- To work within the limits of own competence and responsibility and refer issues beyond peer supporter boundaries to appropriate partners.
- Be prepared to be shadowed by other peer supporters, management or health professionals as required.
- To operate in a friendly and professional manner at all times.
- Maintain BFI standards at all times.
- To consider volunteering on the rota for the FAB helpline.
- Always display your FAB ID badge.
- To undertake other duties as may reasonably be required within the general terms of the job description.
- This position requires the use of a personal vehicle on FAB business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license, MOT and business class 1 insurance and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for FAB business will be prohibited if the employee does not have valid documents.

**In Community Home Visits**
- Undertaking home visits in the postnatal period to promote and support breastfeeding and breast care giving evidence based information.
- Gain mums consent for continued support and complete all necessary paperwork required to update our FAB database.
- Maintaining close contact with mothers throughout the first 3 weeks and weekly up to 6 weeks, working closely with midwives, health visitors and any other partner services involved, keeping them informed of support given.
- Working within the limits of own competence and responsibility and referring issues beyond these limits to relevant agencies.
- Provide multi-area peer support cover as required.
- Work in accordance to the lone working policy.
- Signpost mothers to breastfeeding support groups within the community.

**At Hospital or Birth Centre Settings**
- To work closely with the Infant Feeding Lead, Midwives and other health professionals to offer one to one evidence based breastfeeding peer support to new mothers on the Maternity Wards, Birth Centre, NICU, Delivery Suite, Children’s Ward as and when needed.
- To complete relevant hospital paperwork; to include FAB’s duplicate sheets for mothers’ consent, data collection and bedside support checklist; hospital notes for mothers and babies seen on the ward.
- To complete any communication handover notes as required; to include any follow up needed.
- To observe Trust policies and procedures, infection control, general health and safety policies, rules of conduct and dress codes at all times.
- To ensure families are aware of FAB’s Peer Support Services available in the community - distributing relevant flyers or cards and information.
