Gallery Assistant

Working hours are Sundays 10.30 am to 5.30 pm and Mondays to Thursdays 9 am to 6 pm. You would be expected to cover for absences on Fridays (9 am to 6 pm) and Saturdays (9.30 am to 6 pm) against days off in lieu or extra holiday days.
Founded in 1945, the gallery is based opposite the entrance to King's College, Cambridge, so you will be happy interacting with many different artists, makers and visitors, and negotiating costs, prices and sales.
**Day to day activities will include**:
- Putting out the jewellery, ensuring it is clean and doing a count, and preparing the gallery ready for opening, and at the end of the day putting away the jewellery and closing the gallery.
- Supervising stock administration of jewellery and other artwork
- Handling the front desk and sales, and being welcoming and informative to visitors
- Working and forming partnerships with art organisations like Cambridge Open Studios, in order to set up and participate in exciting exhibitions, and support the artists and makers we represent.
- Helping create, develop, update and manage the website and social media in order to drive the growth of on-line sales, and increase public awareness of the Gallery and its uniqueness.
- Liaising with the Director and other members of the Primavera team, and meeting jewellers, artists and makers.
- Being available to set up and present exhibitions, and willing and keen to to visit fairs and other exhibitions throughout the UK - often on your days off.
**Required**:
- Knowledge of or desire to quickly learn about stones (diamonds - clarity and colour, sapphires, rubies, etc.), metal types (gold, platinum, silver, etc.), their values, design, and the time it takes to design and make jewellery by hand, and shortcuts and economies like casting, plating and outsourcing.
- An interest in the history of handmade British jewellery making, sculpture, paintings, ceramics, furniture design, silver and glass making.
- Upbeat and happy, able to communicate quickly and easily face to face and on the phone, and an effective and pleasant team player under pressure.
- Able to lift and move artwork and hang paintings, move heavy sculpture, and willing and able to drive or cycle in Cambridge to and from King's Parade, and Wellington Court CB1 1HZ where we have our parking.
- Education to Degree level, with at least GCSE level Maths, and an ability and willingness to quickly remember and distinguish between different forms and value of artwork and jewellery.
- Either you already live in Cambridge, or nearby. Parking is available at Wellington Court in the heart of Cambridge.
- Be ready to be involved long-term.
**Desired**:
- Ability to make and sell your own jewellery, ceramics or glass from Primavera, and undertake simple jewellery repairs of other people's work.
Pay: From £11.44 per hour
Expected hours: No more than 40 per week
