London, United Kingdom E3G Full time

SENIOR POLICY ADVISOR, FOSSIL FUEL PRODUCER DIPLOMACY, LONDON

E3G is looking for a Senior Policy Advisor to join its Clean Economy team in its UK office in London. This Senior Policy Advisor will be E3G’s lead on fossil fuel producer country transitions, spread between a focus on the UK’s transition and global diplomatic outreach to support country transitions.

Background

E3G is an independent climate change think tank with a global outlook. We are world leading strategists on the political economy of climate change, dedicated to achieving a safe climate for all. We pride ourselves on bringing independence to an extremely polarised discussion and holding policy makers to account on their promises. E3G is consistently ranked as one of the top-ten most influential environmental think tanks in the world by the University of Pennsylvania’s Global Go To Think Tank Index.

The Climate Neutral Energy Systems (CNES )programme undertakes analysis, builds strategies and facilitates interventions to facilitate a transition to a climate neutral energy sector. It looks at how societies, relationships and economy will change and seeks to put institutions and instruments in place to facilitate this. E3G has been a thought leader on energy systems transition, the potential of efficiency politics and the role of gas in the transition. As clean energy systems are becoming the new mainstream in some of the world, this transforms diplomatic relationships between countries, rebalances power and financial and trade flows.

Context and role overview

The global polycrisis, exacerbated by Russia’s invasion into Ukraine, has triggered fundamental shifts on the global energy markets and in energy politics. The European Union and its member states must now revisit their energy diplomacy and rebalance bilateral, regional, and global energy partnerships and alliances. A new approach is needed to address new market and geopolitical challenges while driving global economy’s transformation towards climate-neutrality to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

Key Responsibilities
- Developing E3G’s fossil fuel producers’ engagement strategy on their shift away from fossil fuel-based economy models and the role energy diplomacy can play in supporting the needed transition;
- Developing E3G thought leadership on the interaction of climate, energy, and UK and EU external relations working with the programme leaders on energy systems, placed based transitions and the Senior Policy Advisor on EU Gas Politics;
- Developing evidence around producing countries’ transition pathways in collaboration with the wider Clean Economy Team;
- Identifying how UK, EU and US external relationships can support oil and gas producing countries to embrace the transition;
- Engaging with and strengthening E3G’s key stakeholder networks on energy, and in particular, oil and gas diplomacy, and managing relationships with NGOs, government institutions, international organisations and academia;
- Developing E3G’s position as a voice in conversations on fossil fuel producers’ transition, develop propositions and advocacy and strengthen E3G’s networks in the EU, the UK and key target regions (on the initial stage the MENA region);
- Organising and participating in stakeholder discussions and workshops;
- Producing internal and external communication materials;

Person Description

You are intellectually curious and enthusiastic about developing solutions in the transition towards climate neutral and resilient economies. You are committed to high quality outputs even when under pressure and use collaboration to get to better outcomes. You are a creative thinker, able to learn fast. You are able to reflect your own strengths and weaknesses and work in a team of diverse personalities. You can identify and engage with a range of external stakeholders to understand their perspectives and communicate your ideas and findings. You are comfortable with complex research projects and confident in running analytical processes.

Experience and Skills
- Have a good undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (required) and post-graduate qualification in a relevant discipline (desirable);
- Have at least 5 years of relevant professional experience. Demonstrate a keen interest in working at the intersection of fossil fuels, diplomacy and geopolitics. You have an understanding of diplomacy and energy You hold experience in at least one of these areas;
