Job Description
About Us
The King’s community is dedicated to the service of society. King’s Strategic Vision 2029 sets out our vision for the future, shaped around five priority areas: educate to inspire and improve; research to inform and innovate; serve to shape and transform; a civic university at the heart of London; and an international community that services the world. Our ambitious Education Strategy sets out the actions that we must take to transform how we teach, how and where our students learn and how we support them during their time with us.
Advisors and Officers in Advice, Wellbeing & Welfare (AWW) provide expert advice and support to our diverse community. At any stage in their university career, students may experience a variety of complex problems relating to money, housing, and welfare issues for which they need practical support and legal advice. Our work is to ensure that these do not become a barrier to their success at King’s and that through our well-being initiatives our students thrive during their studies to make the most of their opportunities after graduation.
About the Role
The Money & Housing Transitions Advisor directly supports offer holders and current students ensuring that they are informed and prepared for any changes to their student income and/or access to accommodation. In collaboration with colleagues in Student Success, Marketing and King’s Residences they will raise awareness of the support available to students with respect to their housing and financial needs. They will also support individual students to consider their budget and housing options, empowering them to take the necessary steps to secure accommodation within their budget, access additional sources of support, and effectively plan for the future. They will identify complex cases that require more detailed casework and advocacy from the Specialist Advisors across Advice, Wellbeing & Welfare and prepare the client and their case information for escalation to a senior colleague.
They will collate and distributing information about the impact changes to study may have on their access to funding and accommodation, including but not limited to study abroad, intercalating at another UK institution and breaks from study or transfers. They will liaise closely with colleagues across SED to ensure that information remains relevant and promoted to relevant student groups. All team members will also contribute to the line management of Money Mentors (student peer advisors) and take responsibility for a key campaign or outreach activity during the year, acting as project managers and working collaboratively with colleagues in and outside the team to meet the objectives.
Previous experience working in a HE within support services would be advantageous but is not essential, relevant work experience in a busy advice centre in the charity or legal sector would be equally applicable to this role. This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced Student Support Officer or recent graduate with a career interest in advice work to develop the necessary skills to specialise in the future. This would also be an opportunity for a community-trained advisor or support worker to bring their valuable experience to a HE advice setting at one of the UK’s leading universities.
This post will be offered on an indefinite contract
Key responsibilities
- Providing initial triage advice at drop-ins, adviceline or outreach activities, under the supervision of a Specialist Money & Housing Advisor. You will keep detailed notes on the case management system and draft the initial response, escalation required and manage any appointment bookings, signposting or referrals out of the service that may be required.
- Acting as the key contact and coordinator for Student Housing campaigns in March and July and contributing to other outreach initiatives led by other colleagues in the team. You and your colleagues will take these opportunities to update and enhance our resources as well as gather feedback from students about their current lived experiences which may contribute to service reports.
- Demystify the information around student finance, welfare benefits and access to housing when students need to take a break from studies, working with specialist advisors to provide case studies as examples and identify gaps in provision to be raised at relevant internal forums.
