Each year, over 150 children in Yorkshire are diagnosed with cancer. When a child is diagnosed, lives are turned upside down instantly: not just for the child but the entire family. Getting well again can be a long and challenging journey, emotionally, physically, and financially.

Candlelighters offers a variety of support groups and events for families affected by childhood cancer. The Family Events Volunteer help the Community Support Team to set up and manage each group, event or community day to ensure it runs smoothly and successfully.

**Key Activities**

Activities will vary according to each event but may include:

- Helping to set up prior to the event (arranging furniture, putting up decorations, etc)
- Putting out food and refreshments
- Meeting and greeting
- Keeping a record of attendance
- Making hot and cold drinks
- Cleaning and tidying up
- Serving lunches and refreshments
- Taking notes
- Taking photos
- Organising or assisting with games and activities
- Engaging with family members and helping them to feel involved
- Helping to supervise children
- Cleaning and tidying up at the end of the event
- Maintaining professional boundaries at all times
- Adhering to Candlelighters’ policies and procedures.

**We are looking for volunteers who**:

- Have experience of working with children or families in a professional context
- Have working knowledge of safeguarding procedures and safer working practices
- Are able to assist with all types of groups and events
- Can manage the emotionally challenging aspects of the role
- Are confident, friendly and approachable
- Have a fun and positive outlook
- Are experienced in working as part of a team
- Can work well and remain calm under pressure
- Are proactive and able to use own initiative
- Are hardworking, reliable and organised
- Are able to move furniture (tables and chairs) and boxes
- Are able to climb multiple flights of stairs
- Are able to maintain professional boundaries and follow Candlelighters Policies and Procedures.

We recognise that family members accessing Candlelighters’ services may wish to volunteer with Candlelighters. However, this particular role is not suitable for family members receiving support from Candlelighters. This is to ensure they are given the best possible care and support without any potential conflict of interest.

Please note, volunteers will not be able to volunteer at a group attended by families they know in a personal capacity.

**How to Apply**

We ask Family Event Volunteers to commit to at least 5 groups per year. Please check if you are able to make some of the dates listed below:
