**Background**

The University of Birmingham is a global institution working within a diverse and vibrant City, offering an inspiring education to our students, and undertaking critically important research. We are a place of open, critical thinking, and the creation, sharing and dissemination of knowledge. Professional Services put students at the heart of all they do and enable an exceptional educational experience. They provide outstanding support to our researchers and help the University to grow its influence regionally, nationally, and globally. They ensure the University’s resources are used wisely, manage and improve the infrastructure which sits at the heart of the institution, and support decisions to be made quickly and based on sound evidence. Our Birmingham Professional programme operates across the University, supporting colleagues to network and collaborate, offering opportunities to learn and develop, contributing to the delivery of the University’s objectives, and helping everyone to understand the broader context within which we work.

**Department overview**

IT Services is one of the University’s largest Professional Services budget centres, employing over 250 people with a total recurrent annual budget of over £10m, with a significant 5 year capital investment program in addition to this. ITS consists of a number of divisions and teams including Infrastructure Services, Application Services, Service Management, IT Security, Advanced Research Computing (ARC), Architecture and Design, and Customer Engagement.

Over the next decade, the University’s aspiration is to establish Birmingham as one of the world's leading universities, and high-quality digital services and IT infrastructure are crucial to achieving that goal. In recognition of this, our brand-new Digital Strategy combined with significant investments in technology mean this is an exciting time to join IT Services, with all of us being a crucial part of ‘making IT happen’ at the University of Birmingham.

IT Services wants to attract outstanding, inspirational, and talented people, support them to succeed, and celebrate their successes. It is our role to ensure that our community has access to accessible, responsive, resilient, and secure systems and support. What we do enables our students, staff, researchers, visitors and partners to confidently and creatively use digital services, technology and data for the benefit of their learning, teaching, research or work.

There is a growing need to support the development and usage of digital learning tools and the University is increasing its commitment and investments in this area. This role will take a leading part in defining and delivering this area as it is developed over the coming years.

The University has a number of teams that support the digital elements of education, including a significant presence in HEFI (Higher Education Futures Institute), the AV support team, as well as local support in many colleges and schools. This role will work closely with all of these teams and also with key senior stakeholders from both academic and professional services areas.

**Role Summary**

This role will work closely with academic and professional services colleagues to explore, define and implement the strategic roadmap for new learning technologies across the institution.

The post holder will have a good understanding of the Education Technology (EdTech) sector and will proactively assess existing and emerging products and technologies against current and future business requirements.

They will utilise their knowledge and judgement to prioritise stakeholder needs and manage expectations in accordance with institutional strategies and available resources - they will also influence these to better match the ever changing internal and external environments.

Reporting initially directly to the Head of Architecture and Design, this will be a key senior management position within IT Services, taking a leading part in the selection and delivery of the University’s digital learning environments.

Over time as the University’s digital learning environments are developed the role may take an increasing part in the day to day delivery of change and support, as well as leading teams/others.
