The role of the advanced practitioner is a multi-disciplinary inter-professional role and whilst there may be some variations in responsibility and clinical roles this job description outlines the key areas of responsibility for these post holders whilst working within the Trust.

To provide highly specialised surgical assistance primarily concentrating on robotic surgery but in addition all aspects of surgery supporting Consultant Surgeons and junior medical staff in the operating theatres. To understand advanced surgical techniques and make professional and clinical decision for which the surgical assistant is accountable.

Assist with the co-ordination and smooth running of the operating sessions by liaising with theatre and other personnel as appropriate.

To assist in the training of theatre staff in all aspects of theatre practice.

To assist in the development of new equipment for surgery and the maintenance of such equipment in conjunction with theatre personnel.

Other roles to include outpatient activity supporting medical staff in clinic and with appropriate training to review patients for follow up.

The opportunity to acquire new skills in a diagnostic setting such as flexible cystoscopy and prostate biopsy.

Reviewing post operative patients on the ward.

Advertising and ensuring the safe positioning of the patient for laparoscopic surgical intervention

To assist the operating surgeon with cutting sutures and ligatures, insertion of drains, securing haemostasis and retracting tissues and organs as is required to conduct gastrointestinal surgery to the highest standard

Correctly prepare, handle and operate endoscopic cameras and associated laparoscopic instrumentation.

To understand the principles of wound healing and to perform skin closure by suture or clip technique.
