Plymouth, United Kingdom Newmedica Full time

Who are we?

Newmedica are one of the leading providers of NHS ophthalmology services in England, providing outpatients appointments, diagnostic testing and eye surgery. We aim to change lives through better sight and eye health.

We care for thousands of NHS and private patients a year in our specialist eye clinics across the country. We have significant growth plans over the next few years as we look to establish a national footprint and open many new sites across the UK.

We are thrilled to say that following an independently conducted survey of Newmedica colleagues, we have been certified as a Great Place to Work®. This is a global benchmark that recognises employers who create an outstanding employee experience.

Role overview

We are looking for a new Ophthalmic Assistant to join our fantastic team in Plymouth.

Our Ophthalmic Assistants are the face of Newmedica - they’re often amongst the first people that our patients interact with on clinic visits and their welcoming, friendly, and empathetic approach is a corner stone of our company ethos.

You will become an integral part of our clinic team, facilitating an important stage of the patient journey taking patients through a range of diagnostic tests before passing them on to a senior clinician. You’ll be taught how to use a variety of different equipment and systems as well as learning about the anatomy of the eye and the conditions we treat.

This is a clinic-based role, however, there will be some admin tasks included where necessary, including taking inbound and outbound calls, preparing and completing patient notes and the ability to complete clinical outcomes.

The thought of eye surgery can be a daunting prospect for patients to deal with. If you have the ability to put patients at ease, have strong communication skills, and are able to explain clearly and effectively what the different tests are for so that patients understand their treatment, then you are a great fit for the role.

This is a fantastic opportunity to progress your skills within a clinic setting, or take the first step on a clinical career path. Newmedica is committed to the growth and development of all our colleagues and being an Ophthalmic Assistant is a great platform to potentially explore a career in diagnostic (clinic) or theatre.

What skills and experience do I need?

We’ll provide all the training so experience isn’t always needed, but the following things will be advantageous:

- You are a people person and have a caring, empathetic nature
- You enjoy learning and have an interest in health care
- Strong communication skills with patients and colleagues alike
- A competent user of all Office 365 programmes & comfortable working on new systems such as patient record systems or diagnostic programmes.
- An excellent grasp of the English language both verbally and in written format
- A good team player - happy to jump in and support others when required

What we’re offering
- A salary of £22,672.00
- 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays
- Work life balance shifts of 5 days a week with 1 in 2 weekend days
- A company pension scheme
- Recommend a friend scheme of £500
- Time in lieu scheme - if you go over your contracted hours, we will either give this back to you as paid overtime or as time in lieu.
- Access to a range of benefits including free eye tests, discounted or free glasses, a free 24/7 well-being/counselling/advice service and a retail/technology discount scheme.
- An environment where learning and development is supported through a range of various learning tools and courses.
- Opportunities for progression into other areas of the business
- Working with a friendly multi-disciplinary team passionate about improving the lives of our patients
- A bright, spacious and modern working environment, built to the highest standards
