Cardiff, United Kingdom Companies House Full time

Companies House have created an exciting new role as Chief Data Officer, to reflect the key part that data plays in the organisation’s success and ability to realise its future ambitions around growth, improvement, becoming data and digitally led, enhancing services and income, and broadening critical activity and impact. We are looking for a driven and passionate data leader to add to the data team and create a leading data directorate, working with colleagues, the Government Digital Service, BEIS and wider government. Companies House was awarded £63m in the spending review to spend on data and digital projects over the next 3 years. We seek a successful individual who is able to support us in harnessing this investment to improve data governance, data management, data insight and data sharing to benefit the economy.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Executive and Main Board (and as Head of the Data Profession), you will lead the Data directorate, educating others in championing the value of data across the whole of the organisation, whilst building a strong team and culture, shaping the future of Companies House. You will lead the organisation in leveraging our data capability to deliver organisational objectives, with your team. You will lead a directorate of 40 people with 6 team leaders reporting directly to you covering Data, Behavioural Science, Corporate Performance, Data Science, Statistics, and Data Engineering.

Companies House are undergoing a historic change, to our systems, services, culture and ways of working. Our Data and Digital services are the heart of much of this change. Earlier this year the UK Government passed the Economic Crime Act which has given us the power to create the Register of Overseas Entities (ROE) which is being delivered early and at pace.

The second Economic Crime bill has been accelerated and will give us new powers in 2023, which will see us play an active role in the fight against economic crime as well as fulfilling our ambition to be the most innovative, open and trusted registry in the world. These changes represent the biggest opportunity for Companies House in almost 170 years. We are being granted the ability to play a leading role in the fight against corrupt business practices by providing the transparency and clarity necessary for the UK to continue to be regarded as a world-leading place to do business.

We are a data driven organisation where data is treated as an asset. The integrity of that data is crucial as we provide it to millions of users every year as well as Government Departments as we play our critical role in the fight against economic crime. Internally we are working to maximise the potential of our data and insight to improve and target our services to our users and to drive forward our high performing teams across the organisation. This role will lead in the transformation of the way we analyse, use and share data.

This is a hybrid role and your time will be split between home working and our Cardiff office.

**Responsibilities**:

- As a member of our Executive Team and Main Board, and as Head of the Data Profession, shape our strategy and participate in corporate governance, delivery and risk management, ensuring accountability and ownership of our outcomes.
- Review and enhance the current strategy, before setting out to deliver this to 2025, working with your team, the Executive (including the Director of Digital & Technology and the Director of Project Management) and the Main Board to shape the future of Companies House.
- Develop and deliver the data strategy, to move Companies House closer to being a leading data organisation, maximising the value of our data for the UK economy, and underpinning our strategy and direction with data.
- Be responsible for the utilisation and interoperability of data so that we can achieve the most value by informing decision making at the most appropriate level and in the right place.
- Have responsibility for our strategic use of data to deliver our vision to be the most innovative, open, and trusted registry in the world, achieved through maximising the value of our register, combatting economic crime and inspiring trust and confidence.
- Lead on data governance, data quality and data strategy, to derive maximum value from the data available to us and to the wider society. Champion data standards and the value of data to our organisation.
- Combine accountability and responsibility for data governance, data quality and data life cycle management, along with the exploitation of data assets to create business value such as combatting economic crime more effectively.
- Develop our already Whitehall-leading approach to open data even further, while strengthening our data management, data governance, data analysis and data science skills.
- Ensure that insight from data can be used to drive organisational decision making and also expand and embed the use of good inform
