**Mental Health Nurse**

**Full-time**
As a Mental Health Nurse in Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps, you'll help keep soldiers and their families fit and healthy as part of a team working in a diverse range of clinical environments. You'll treat patients everywhere from community mentalhealth facilities on military bases to field hospitals in operational environments and have the opportunity to work in management, training and administration. **WORLD-CLASS TRAINING**

If you want to be a Mental Health Nurse, you'll be part of a team that provides the highest standard of care. Army nursing can be tough, so we'll give you the best possible military and professional training. You can develop your skills throughout your careerwith further study up to and beyond MSc level, funded by us. It's not all hard work though. You'll also get to travel, take part in Adventure Training and play sports for the Army. **Training**

**Step 1** - You join the Army and complete your initial military training.

**Step 2** - You then complete a short Transition to Military Practice Course, after which you will be assigned to a Department of Community Mental Health (DCMH) to commence your preceptorship and rotation programme and begin life as an ArmyMental Health Nurse.

**JOIN AS A STUDENT MENTAL HEALTH NURSE**

We also train our own Mental Health Nurses. You will complete a 3-year degree programme that will give you professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. You will be well supported by military and civilian University staff at the DefenceSchool of Healthcare Education within Birmingham City University and will then be employed as a Registered Nurse by the Army. After successful completion of your Student Nurse Training you will wear the rank of Acting Corporal. Once you are registered as aMental Health Nurse you will be assigned to a department of community mental health (DCMH) where you will be gradually exposed to mental health caseloads and will be provided mentorship during this phase.

**Training**

**Step 1** - You join the Army as a Soldier and complete Phase 1 Training prior to starting your university course.

**Step 2** - You then complete a short Transition to Military Practice Course, after which you will be assigned to a Defence Medical Group Hospital (DMG) to commence your preceptorship and rotation programme and begin life as an Army Nurse.

Supporting Learning and Assessment in Practice (SLAiP) will be the first formal qualification you will be required to complete. You will have the opportunity to specialise in one of a number of areas, including: Primary Health Care (to Advanced practice),Emergency Nursing (to Advanced practice), Critical Care, Burns & Plastics, Trauma & Orthopaedics, Sexual Health, General Medicine and General Surgery. Alongside this you will gain significant personal development and development.**

**PAY AND BENEFITS**

**MENTAL HEALTH NURSE SOLDIER**:Earn £14,931 during initial training. When you complete your military training and join your unit, your pay will rise to £32,076.

**MENTAL HEALTH NURSE OFFICER**:You'll be on an annual salary of £26,903 during your training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, before commissioning on a minimum of £35,744 a year, depending on your experience.

**STUDENT MENTAL HEALTH NURSE**:Earn £14,931 during initial training. During your time at university you will be paid up to £21,409 each year. Upon qualification and first posting your pay will rise to £32,076.

**Qualifications you’ll need**:
**MENTAL HEALTH NURSE** - You need to be registered with the NMC. You can join as a newly qualified nurse, be in your final year of training (on a course which will result in NMC registration) or join with prior nursing experience.

**STUDENT MENTAL HEALTH NURSE** - 120 UCAS points plus 3 GCSEs
