NUH is looking to recruit 2 Substantive Consultant Obstetric Anaesthetist. We have a tertiary referral obstetric unit with about 9000 deliveries a year and are a regional centre for the management of women diagnosed with abnormally invasive placentas. The job would include a regular long days covering obstetrics, elective section lists and participation in a dedicated obstetric on call rota covering either the QMC or City campuses. You would be well supported by your colleagues and this would include having a consultant buddy when you start on the on call rota. Outside of obstetrics you will have the opportunity to undertake anaesthetic activities in a wide range specialties - if you have a particular interest outside of obstetrics we would aim to support this.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will be expected to fulfil the duties with the agreed Job Plan.

The appointee will be responsible for the management of those patients admitted under his/her care.

Provision with Consultant colleagues of a comprehensive elective and emergency anaesthetic service.

Provision of reciprocal cover for periods of leave.

Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and the proper functioning of the department.

Working for our organisation

Nottingham University Hospitals Trust was created by the merger of Queen’s Medical Centre and Nottingham City Hospital. There are Anaesthetic Departments based at each campus, both are large and active departments which have close operational links. The Anaesthetic Departments are also integrated with the Critical Care and Pain Management Services, which with Theatres form the Clinical Support Division (CSD).

The Divisional Director for CSD is Dr Thea De Beer and Acute Pathway Lead (comprising Theatres, Anaesthesia & Critical Care) is Dr Hannah Sycamore. There is, in addition, a Head of Service on each campus; Dr Sumera Hussain at the City campus and Dr Chris Harber at the QMC campus.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The person appointed will be required to devote substantially the whole of his/her time to the duties of the post and give them priority at all times.

The main duties of the role is to provide anaesthetic service working alongside the obstetric team and expectant mothers.

There is a requirement to be part of an on call rota.

Clinical Skills/Experience

Essential criteria
- Training and experience requisite to meeting all aspects of the job plan, including on call work. Technical skills/competencies required for all aspects of the job plan. Ability to maintain clinical credibility and authority with a multi-professional team including senior trainees. Specific training and experience in anaesthesia for subspecialty work according to job plan and for emergency surgery. Evidence that relevant clinical skills/knowledge have been maintained.

Desirable criteria
- Specific training in communication skills Specific training in patient safety and/or human factors

Teaching, audit and research

Essential criteria
- Evidence of participation in Clinical Audit. Able to teach and support junior staff effectively. Commitment to training.

Desirable criteria
- Original Research Publications Higher teaching degree or qualification or training Evidence of organising and delivering teaching at under-graduate and post-graduate level Demonstrable ability as a teacher with evidence of training for the role Diploma in Medical Education
