Applications are invited for two full-time Consultant Medical Microbiologist posts at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. These posts are a combination of a new post, and a retirement replacement, which are designed to support the provision of a high quality infection management service in Nottingham. The Microbiology Laboratory is based at the QMC Campus however clinical duties will be required at both QMC Campus and the City Hospital Campus.

The Microbiology Laboratory at Queens Medical Centre serves both NUH campuses, as well as community healthcare services such as the Nottinghamshire Healthcare Trust and the Nottinghamshire Integrated Care System with a total population of ~640,000. A large number of clinical specialties are provided in Nottingham and the Microbiology service is actively involved in the clinical management of microbiological and virological infections with regular ward rounds and liaison with specialist units. The Department works closely with Infection Control and supports Antimicrobial Stewardship within the Trust and community. The laboratory works closely with the School of Life Sciences, University of Nottingham and there will be opportunities to develop research interests.

Main duties of the job

Applicants will be required to have full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the GMC (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview).

As well as the above, UK trained medical applicants should also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in medical microbiology, or within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.

The Microbiology laboratory is a large NHS laboratory serving both NUH campuses, as well as Nottinghamshire Healthcare Trust and Clinical Commissioning Groups with a total population of ~640,000. The current service workload based on recent activity data is approximately 918,000 with 604,000 bacteriology and 314,000 virology/serology work types a year, two thirds of which is acute hospital diagnostic work and the remaining one third of the work is for general practitioners.

The department is actively involved in the clinical management of microbiological and virological infection with regular ward rounds and liaison with the specialist units, works closely with colleagues in Infectious Diseases and supports antimicrobial stewardship within the trust and community.

A large number of specialties requiring clinical microbiological support are provided in Nottingham including General Medicine, General Surgery, Elderly Care, Critical Care, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics (including a PICU and two large neonatal units), Clinical Haematology (including bone marrow transplantation), Oncology, Cystic Fibrosis, Renal Dialysis, Renal Transplantation, Hepatology, Infectious Diseases & Genito-Urinary Medicine (both providing HIV services), Paediatric and Adult Neurosurgery, Spinal Surgery, Regional Trauma Centre, Orthopaedics, Burns, Cardio-Thoracic Surgery and Cardiac Intensive Care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The appointee, in collaboration with the other consultants and senior scientists, will be expected to fulfil the following duties within the agreed Job Plan:

- To provide a comprehensive clinical and liaison microbiology service to the following:

- Clinicians at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
- General Practitioners in the Greater Nottinghamshire health community
- Other users of the Microbiology service in the Greater Nottinghamshire health community/wider network

To be involved in the training of Specialty trainees (including educational and clinical supervisor roles where required), Trust Grade doctors, and scientific staff. To contribute, as required, to the teaching of microbiology to undergraduates within the School of Life Sciences University of Nottingham, and teaching for junior and senior medical colleagues within specialties across the trust. To take part in Audit and Quality Improvement within the department, supporting other specialties with this as appropriate. To maintain a programme of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) with the Royal College of Pathologists (or equivalent scheme) and to participate in the annual Consultant appraisal and revalidation processes.
