Leeds has one of the largest Childrens Hospitals in the country, delivering surgical procedures to over 12 000 children per year, including around 300 neonates. Specialist paediatric services in Leeds include cardiac surgery, laparoscopic and robotic surgery, airway surgery, liver and renal transplant, neurosurgery, and major plastic reconstructive surgery. The Trust is also a Paediatric Major Trauma Centre with a 16 bed PICU a 6 bed HDU and a tertiary NICU. The Childrens Hospital has a fully funded Pain Service encompassing acute, chronic and complex pain management.

The multi-disciplinary team provides daily ward rounds to all clinical areas for the management of acute and complex pain, utilising higher level interventions such as opiate infusions, patient
- & nurse-controlled analgesia, neuraxial and regional local anaesthetic infusions and ambulatory analgesia. The Chronic Pain Service is multi-disciplinary with clinics held 2 3 times each week, offering out-patient and in-patient therapy, pain management programmes (group therapy) and interventions where appropriate for young people with chronic pain throughout the Yorkshire and Humber referral area. The team includes Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetists, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Clinical Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Clinical Pharmacists and an Administrator. The team works closely with Adult Chronic Pain Services, Paediatricians, Paediatric Rheumatologists and Mental health Services MEDICAL STAFF IN THE DEPARTMENT The Anaesthetic Department Leeds Teaching Hospitals employs over 167 Consultant Anaesthetists, each with their own subspecialty interest.

The Department of Anaesthesia is based across two sites at St James Hospital and the Leeds General Infirmary. Leeds Childrens Hospital Anaesthetic Department The Childrens Hospital is located within the Leeds General Infirmary. There are 22 Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetists and 6 Paediatric Cardiac Anaesthetists. The Acute Pain Service is supported by 6 Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetists, 2 of whom support the Chronic Pain Service.

OBJECTIVES OF THE POST 1.To work with other paediatric anaesthetic colleagues in the provision of a comprehensive paediatric pain service in the Leeds Childrens Hospitals. 2.To develop and / or consolidate expertise in Paediatric Pain Management within paediatric anaesthesia and fulfil all requirements for advanced training in paediatric anaesthesia. 3.To maintain and expand the excellence of teaching and research already established within the Trust. 4.To support service plans for the specialty, taking account of the changes in clinical practice and new technologies available.

3.3Research Although this is a clinical post, the appointee will be expected to actively participate in research projects. All main Anaesthetic journals are available plus reprint facilities in the Anaesthetic department. The involvement of trainees in research is encouraged and supervision is provided. PC access and other I.T.

Objective The post should attract those wanting to specialise in paediatric anaesthesia with an interest in Pain Management, and it will provide extensive training and experience in this sub-specialty. It will also give significant opportunities for clinical audit and research. Summary of post The post is for one year and can be tailored to previous experience but the majority of time will be spent in paediatric anaesthesia with weekly participation in the Childrens out-patient clinic and the Acute pain ward round. Other modules could include time with therapists, Adult chronic pain services and/or visits to other paediatric pain services nationally.

This post will attract an out of hours banding supplement and shift patterns are normal and long days/nights with some weekend commitments. The shift pattern in currently 1:8 and the long days/nights/weekend work will be on the general paediatric registrar rota. Daytime work/training will be split between Pain management and paediatric anaesthesia. LEVELS OF RESPONSIBILITY The Trust as a teaching hospital recognises the importance of links with the University and Leeds School of Medicine for undergraduate teaching, and all clinical fellow and medical staff are required to provide an appropriate contribution to the undergraduate teaching programme.

The post holder will be required to participate in the informal teaching of medical students, nurses and operating department practitioners/assistants. The post holder will have access to the Trusts extensive and spacious library in the Clinical Sciences Building which houses approximately 5,500 books and several hundred journals. Staff in this library will also arrange loans of books etc. from the Medical School Library and the National Lending Library based at Boston Spa.
