Based in the University Research Office the post-holder will support the research

activities of the University through open access publication, research data

management, bibliometric services and researcher skills development. The successful
- Sunderland Research Repository and will support academic staff in meeting their

various open access requirements.

It is essential the post-holder understands the critical elements of academic publishing

and ‘open access’ regulation within the context of Higher Education research funding.

The post holder will be able to use their initiative, work as part of a team, and have the

ability to cope in a dynamic and challenging environment. They will work closely with

the wider research team in the University Research Office. A high level of confidentiality

is also required.

The post holder delivers advocacy, guidance, training and support on publishing

research and Open Access and will manage the use of the Open Access budget. You

will be an effective communicator and have commitment to deliver excellent

research focussed support.

**Key Responsibilities**and Accountabilities**:

- To support the management and dissemination of university research

outputs through the Institutional Repository (SURE)
- Ensuring items deposited in the Repository are funder and REF

compliant; and aligned to the institutional ‘Open Access’ policy
- Advising staff on all matters of academic publishing, including the

potential fraudulent or predatory publishers developing teaching,

support, guidance and publicity materials
- Providing advice and support in the use of publication citation data and the

responsible use of metrics in research
- Ensuring the integrity and accuracy of repository records and data
- Maintain and develop the Institutional Repository (SURE)
- Support academic colleagues to input their research outputs into SURE
- Create and manage metadata for the exploitation of research outputs

through SURE
- Verify data submitted by academic colleagues
- Undertake appropriate checks to ensure copyright ownership
- Carry out appropriate checks to ensure REF OA compliance, including

embargo periods
- Liaise with academic authors over their submissions to SURE
- Support the Research Environment and Assessment Officer on the

preparation of future REF and KEF submissions
- Advocate and promote SURE with the academic community
- Provide support and training to the academic community in making compliant

deposits to SURE
- Create and maintain support documentation regarding processes for the

creation of compliant deposits
- Engage with the national/regional research repository community to

identify and share best practice and ensure the University of Sunderland is

engaged with developments in the sector
- Keep up to date with research data practices and policies, advising on

their requirements
- Provide support and guidance for data management planning working

with the Strategic Projects and Funding Team and the Data Protection

Team for all associated elements of managing data before and after

research projects
These duties provide a framework for the role and should not be regarded as a

definitive list. Other reasonable duties may be required consistent with the grade

of the post.

**Special**Circumstances**:
Research Office staff are expected to support University research events and to

actively engage in service activities. This may include the need to work outside of

normal working hours. The role holder is required to work flexibly to ensure

effective and optimum service delivery.

- Hold a degree qualification or equivalent

**Knowledge and Experience**:

- Knowledge and expertise relevant to this role, through formal

qualification and/or substantial experience
- Proven experience of managing digital content or the ability to do so
- A proven understanding of how to deliver effective customer service,

including communicating with internal and external customers at all

levels
- Experience of designing and producing support and training materials,

guidance documentation and publicity material;
- Proven ability to demonstrate initiative and work independently

Ability to work collaboratively with others and make a positive contribution

to the team
- Workload management skills, scheduling and balancing activity to meet

deadlines and changing priorities
