**SHANKILL PARISH CARING ASSOCIATION**

**MINORITY ETHNIC SUPPORT OFFICER**

**Responsible to**:The Chairperson of Shankill Parish Caring Association (SPCA) or his/her nominee

Strategy of SPCA by facilitating education, empowerment, and engagement within ethnic communities in Lurgan.

**Salary Rate**:£15.50 per hour

**Details include**:
1. To build relationships, trust and confidence and mentor Ethnic community leaders in Lurgan in areas such as community development activity and community relations. To be a listening ear and a neutral sounding board for Community Concerns.

2. To work with the Ethnic Project Steering Group to develop and implement an action plan delivering the Ethnic Support objectives of SPCA. This will involve 3 stands: Equipping the Community with
Skills (signposting for training etc), Empowering the Community (workshops on local issues, history, culture, sectarianism, racism, provision of community Projects) and Engaging the Community
(Mentoring, Encouraging etc).

3. To increase contact, dialogue, sharing and integration within and between communities; and support creative and innovative approaches to dealing with contentious issues.

4. Promote greater understanding and acceptance of diversity between communities, thereby reducing racism and discrimination.

5. To prepare briefing papers and reports etc. as required by e.g. Board of Directors, funders, steering group.

6. To represent SPCA on various networking forums and share information and best practice for the betterment of Good Relations regionally.

7. To maintain and further raise the awareness of the programme through the publication and dissemination of relevant information and publications.

8. With admin support to ensure the organisation and marketing of events which are part of the project.

9. Networking and the development of Strategic partnerships in order to lever in additional funding and share information and best practice for the betterment of Good Relations regionally.

10. To provide a link between statutory and voluntary groups and individuals to establish effective working relationships and encouraging liaison with statutory and voluntary organisations in the area in order to identify issues or discussion and possible joint action.

11. Any other reasonable duties required by the management committee.

**Notes**:

- This position will be supported by the Administrative staff (5 Hours per week).
- The position is that of a Community Mentor/Coordinator and the Community Leaders themselves must be actively involved in the planning and delivery.
- In order to comply with our Child Protection Policy and Vulnerable Adult Policy we will require all employees to undertake an Access NI disclosure.
- The successful applicant will be provisionally employed on a probationary period of 3 months.

**Personal Specification**

**Essential Criteria**

**Applicants must**:
1. Have a minimum of 3 years relevant experience in Community Development and Community Relations.

2. Have at least 2 years experience in implementing and managing a community development/relations programme.

**Skills and attributes**
- Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to facilitate
- Have ability to use own initiative, plan and organise work.
- Have ability to engage creatively and flexibly
- Have an ability to facilitate workshops/events
- Have ability to challenge negative social behaviour and mentor community leaders
- Have a proven mediation track record
- Have ability to manage a budget and report to management.
- Have ability to work with IT and facility to work remotely where applicable.

**Desirable Criteria**

**Applicants should**:
1. Have a relevant qualification (E.g. Community Development, Community Relations or Good Relations).

2. Experience working with local minority Ethnic Communities.

3. Have a working knowledge of the local political and cultural issues faced within the Lurgan area.

4. Have an established working relationship with key local stakeholders.

5. Be able to take instruction and respond professionally, meeting deadlines.

6. Have access to transport which enable the post holder to meet the requirements of the post.

7. Have additional language skills which would be beneficial those still leaning English as a second language.

**Job Types**: Part-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 25 months
Part-time hours: 16 per week

**Salary**: £15.50 per hour
