Diffraction and Microscopy Specialist

We are seeking an experienced and well organised scientist who will play a key role in managing and supporting the analytical facilities in the department's micro-analysis lab. These include two Bruker X-ray powder diffractometers and one QuantaFEG600 SEM with associated sample preparation and data analysis equipment.

These state-of-the-art facilities are used for the investigation of geological and synthetic materials by a variety of people including academic staff, visiting scientists and postgraduate students from several research groups.

The role of the successful applicant will include: responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the lab, high-precision alignment of instruments and running samples; developing, maintaining and managing the laboratories, and troubleshooting laboratory issues in a time and cost-efficient manner; working with users (PIs, staff, post-doctoral research fellows, undergraduate masters and graduate students) to develop and establish new laboratory procedures and techniques; training laboratory users; contributing to papers for peer-reviewed journals; advising research staff and group leaders (PIs) on the development and implementation of future research projects; forging and maintaining collaborations with academic and industrial partners; optimising laboratory usage to balance research project data production with quick turn-around commercial contract work; overseeing laboratory orders and budgeting; overseeing X-ray safety procedures.

The successful applicant would be expected to have comprehensive knowledge of one or more of the following techniques: X-ray diffraction (phase identification, structural analyses, structure solution and refinement, quantitative analyses, microstructural analyses), SEM imaging and data handling from SEM based techniques (CL, EDS), EBSD data analysis (for textural studies).

Applicants should have excellent communication skills, be well organised and flexible in their approach, and be able to work on their own initiative. They should have experience of working in a research environment and hold a degree in a relevant scientific discipline.
