Truro, United Kingdom Cornwall Council Full time

A new opportunity has arisen within the Education Welfare Service in Cornwall for you to join us as an Education Welfare Officer and work across the County to support schools and families to improve education engagement and to reduce exclusions.

Cornwall’s Education Welfare Service is a statutory service providing support and guidance to all schools across the County, delivering on a wide range of responsibilities including children missing from education, children not in school and Elective Home Education.

The role involves working directly with children and young people, their parents and carers, school professionals and a range of other agencies to identify, assess, challenge and follow up on the needs of children where there is concern or duty in relation to school attendance, behaviour, achievement and their general educational welfare.

The role will require you to discharge the Local Education Authority’s duties concerning school attendance and the welfare of children under section 7 and 19 Education Act 1996 and Children Act 1989 (Education Supervision Orders). The preparation of School Attendance Orders, Education Supervision Orders and Parenting Orders for court will also be required.

The Education Welfare Service is an active contributor to Cornwall’s Belonging Framework and this is an exciting opportunity to become involved in direct work to improve the inclusion opportunities and outcomes for children across Cornwall.

**About You**

You will be an experienced children’s practitioner from an education, teaching, social care or youth worker setting; with secure knowledge and expertise in statutory education legislation and regulations in relation to school attendance and children’s right to an education.

If you are innovative, dedicated and not afraid of change or challenge, this position will enable you to champion children’s rights to education, supporting them and their families and working with schools to ensure children are able to access education. You will be passionate about working with children, able to work independently, have access to transport and able to travel within the county.

In turn we will offer a full induction package, peer mentoring and supervision support.

This is a public/customer-facing role, where the statutory English language requirement for public sector workers applies.

In order to best serve our communities, we are striving to achieve a diverse workforce that is inclusive of all backgrounds, cultures and identities; e.g. race, disability, sex, gender, age, religion and sexual orientation. We are an equal opportunities and Disability Confident employer, and we will assess applicants on their merits.

It’s a vital part of creating a safe and positive environment and making a commitment to keeping all service users safe from harm.

Whilst the location/work-base for this role has been specified our evolving ways of working means that the role may require you to also work remotely (e.g. from home/other locations). We will discuss this with you during the recruitment process.
