- and post-analytical processing of patient specimens for Biochemistry, and various laboratory duties supporting the biomedical scientists in the Automated and Specialist areas of the Clinical Chemistry department.

We provide a full 24/7 service supported by a shift system (Agenda for Change Terms and Conditions apply) including weekends and Bank Holidays. Previous laboratory experience would be an advantage.

The post holder will support the day-to-day activities of the Automated Clinical Chemistry section, working under the direction of qualified staff, as part of the Chemistry team. They will process clinical specimens for biological testing and associated supporting functions. They will undertake relevant laboratory duties in a timely and efficient manner as directed by SOPs and departmental policy. They will help to maintain and run pre
- and post-analytical equipment. The post holder will be required to participate in the 24hr service rota.

In the Non-automated (specialist) Chemistry section the post holder will support the day-to-day activities of the section, including the operation of analysers, performing analytical procedures and general laboratory duties.

Key responsibilities
1. To act as a Laboratory Support Technician, performing a comprehensive range of routine and specialist Biochemistry and Haematology analyses, under supervision from experienced Biomedical Scientists.
2. On rotation, provide assistance to Biomedical Scientists in Non Automated and Core/Automated laboratories.
3. Undertake specialist manual and semi-automated procedures, under supervision from experienced Biomedical Scientists.
4. To maintain, under the supervision of qualified Biomedical Scientists, highly complex analytical equipment in optimum operational condition, taking necessary remedial action during technical failure. Respond to error messages, referring to supervisory staff where necessary, and liaising with engineers called to failing equipment.
5. To enter patient demographic information, collate results and enter data into the laboratory IT systems.
6. To utilise necessary interpersonal skills to ensure effective liaison with service users to provide the best care for the patient.

- To have gained an intermediate level of technical and analytical knowledge by participating in ongoing training.
- To ensure compliance with all local and national standards of work practice eg. Clinical Pathology Accreditation (CPA).
- To maintain the knowledge necessary to assist with performing specialised procedures during rotation through the highly specialised laboratory sections associated with a teaching hospital tertiary referral centre.
- To have gained the necessary knowledge and skills sufficient to work independently, with the minimum of supervision (within SOP’s).
- To maintain personal and professional development by attending training, lectures, study days and workshops as and when relevant or as per instructions of the Directorate Manager.
- Read all relevant literature provided.
- Maintain knowledge of operational policies and procedures through use of the departmental electronic notice board and document management system.

Advice, Guidance and Interpersonal
- To deal sympathetically during liaison with colleagues, other healthcare professionals and staff from external organisations.
- To use empathy and understanding to ensure that technical, clinical and linguistic barriers to understanding are overcome.
- To report results to clinicians and other service users in a professional manner.
