Applications are invited from suitably qualified individuals for the post of Locum Consultant in Clinical Biochemistry and Metabolic Medicine at the Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LUHFT). This is a 6 month fixed term post. This is an exciting and challenging opportunity to join a dynamic team of consultant chemical pathologists and managing the bone metabolic clinics for the specialty.

Clinical duties will be based mainly at the Royal Liverpool Hospital site. The consultant will be expected to do 2 bone metabolic clnincs per week. The post is for 2.5 Programmed Activities (PAs): direct clinical care activity.

The department of Metabolic Medicine is based at Edward building (4th floor) at new Royal Liverpool Hospital site.

The post holder will be expected to follow national governance standards as set out in the Healthcare Commission document Standards for Better Health. In addition, the post holder will actively participate in the Trust’s clinical governance strategy. Consultants are expected to provide a lead for, and undertake, quality improvement and clinical audit. The post-holder will be required to comply with the principles of research governance and Caldecott requirements.

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was created on 1 October 2019 following the merger of two adult acute Trusts, Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust.

The merger provides an opportunity to reconfigure services in a way that provides the best healthcare services to the city and improves the quality of care and health outcomes that patients experience.

The Trust runs Aintree University Hospital, Broadgreen Hospital, Liverpool University Dental Hospital and the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

It serves a core population of around 630,000 people across Merseyside as well as providing a range of highly specialist services to a catchment area of more than two million people in the North West region and beyond.

The post

The locum consultant will share in the provision of outpatient clinics, including remote access clinics, in lipid disorders and metabolic bone disease. There will be three outpatient clinics per week. The successful applicant will join the other consultants to provide advice on the management of biochemical abnormalities in inpatients within RLBUHT and AUH and also provide advice and guidance to General Practitioners on a one in four rota.

Main Duties

1. To provide a clinical advisory service for Clinical Biochemistry in the Blood Sciences Department of Liverpool Clinical Laboratories (LcL).

2. To share responsibility at consultant level in the metabolic bone disease and lipid outpatient clinics.

3. Providing consultant level clinical and training supervision of medical and other staff associated with the unit.

4. Subject to the provisions of the Terms and Conditions of Service, the post-holder will be expected to observe the Trust’s agreed policies and procedures, drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters, and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions of the Trust.

5. All medical and dental staff employed by the Trust are expected to comply with its Risk Management and Health and Safety Policies and with the guidelines of the General Medical Council, Good Medicine Practice.

Clinical Governance
