The role of an ECP provides the exciting opportunity to work as part of a team, collaborating with other professionals to support and enhance children’s early learning and development. An ECP works in partnership with colleagues, families and other professionals.
The role of an ECP includes:
- Planning and leading learning experiences to meet the needs of all children.
- Facilitating, scaffolding, introducing, evaluating and enhancing learning of all children in a key group and across nursery.
- Planning and evaluating learning activities and areas with colleagues and children.
- Participating in outdoor learning activities in all weathers.
- Supporting children with personal care tasks.
- Attending to first aid and administration of essential medicines for children.
- Supporting children who may have a wide range of additional support needs.
- Engaging in professional dialogue with colleagues and other professionals.
- Observing, playing and engaging in quality interactions with children as they play and learn.
- Contributing to planning meetings through sharing evaluations, observations and extending learning experiences.
- Engaging in staff meetings and continued professional learning.
- Ensuring a welcoming ethos and inviting environment for families and children.
- Supporting and encouraging healthy eating, particularly through snack and preparation.
- Leading specific learning areas of the nursery both indoors and out.
- Planning, facilitating and participating in walks and trips within the local community.
- Leading whole nursery activities/learning experiences.
- Engaging with and meeting parents.
- Engaging with and meeting partner professionals.
- Planning, assessing, monitoring, recording, reporting and tracking children at an individual level.
- Writing reports for individual children in a key group.
- Completing online learning updates and feedback for individual children.
- Managing, supporting and developing social, emotional and behaviours of individual children.
- Working as part of a staff working group to improve nursery outcomes for children, families and nursery community.
- Demonstrating a sound understanding and ability to implement into practise, key documentation relating to Early Learning and Childcare.

- Have a sound understanding of the role they play in child protection and safeguarding.
- Be committed to participating in personal learning to further develop or learn new skills.
- Have a sound knowledge and understanding of child development theories, curriculum for Excellence and current local and national guidance and documentation.
For the role of Early Childhood Practitioner, you should hold an appropriate qualification e.g. SNNEB, NNEB, HNC, SCQF level 7 equivalent or SVQ 3 in Childcare and Education or SVQ 3 Social Services (Children and Young People, as well as have the eligibility to register with SSSC.
