The Liaison and Diversion service is a multi-disciplinary team operating across West Yorkshire. They work with vulnerable adults and young people who come into contact with the criminal justice system, with the aim of diverting individuals away from crime and into health, social care or other support organisations.

The postholder will lead on the substance misuse pathway in Wakefield, holding a complex caseload of clients. This will include arrest referral work in both the courts and the community and completing assessments to help form sentencing decisions specifically around community sentencing of drug rehabilitation/alcohol treatment requirements.

We are looking for a Substance Misuse Liaison Worker who holds a professional qualification in a related field eg. social care, health, education, police, probation, youth work or with a minimum of 3 years’ experience of working with complex needs or of working in the criminal justice system in the last 5 years. This is a full-time role on a fixed term contract until March 2025.

The role can be pressurised and you will need knowledge of the legislative framework which underpins the Criminal Justice System along with a thorough understanding of the risks and needs that young people and vulnerable adults experience that are associated with adverse outcomes. You will be highly organised with excellent communication skills and be able to engage with clients with a trauma informed approach whilst working as part of a multi-disciplinary team and across organisational boundaries. Experience of and the ability to liaise and build partnerships with the local substance misuse treatment service and other agencies is essential as well as the knowledge of the services available to people and their families.
