Alongside our Library, we also operate an Archive Service which preserves and provides access to material relating to both administrative aspects and scientific activities and outputs of UKCEH and its predecessor organisations (including the Nature Conservancy, Institute of Freshwater Ecology, Institute of Terrestrial Ecology, Institute of Hydrology, and Institute of Virology and Environmental Microbiology).

Our dedicated Library Services team work to support staff across all four office locations, ensuring the smooth day-to-day operation of the services and providing essential support. You will be based at our busy Lancaster site where our archive/long-term storage facility is situated and work alongside our other established Library and Archives Assistant.

Your main responsibilities will include:

- Receiving, processing, shelving, and disposing of archive deposits; maintaining the archive database; and liaising with users
- Compilation and updating of the UKCEH Register of Science Archives and long-term storage sites
- Library collection management; creation and editing of catalogue records
- Handling enquiries, book loans, renewals, returns and inter-library loan requests
- Processing records deposited in the NERC Open Research Archive, UKCEH’s online repository.
- Providing library inductions together with advice and instruction on library systems and resources.
- Please note that this position will involve occasional travel (no more than once every 2-3 months) to our Edinburgh and Bangor sites, to provide on-site support, which may involve overnight stays.

** Due to the nature of this role there will also be a requirement for manual handling including lifting and carrying (training will provided)

For the role of Library and Archives Assistant we’re looking for somebody who:

- Has previous experience working within a Library or Archive capacity in an academic or research environment
- Is experienced in providing administrative support to colleagues across multiple sites
- Has knowledge of web-based information resources and tools relevant to a scientific research organisation (e.g, Web of Science and Scopus)
- Ideally has experience of using the Heritage Cirqa library management system
- Has proven ability to work as part of a team, as well as the ability to work independently with limited supervision
- Demonstrates excellent written and oral communication skills
- Applies a methodical approach to their work and is highly organised
- Demonstrates excellent attention to detail and is IT literate (MS Office: Outlook, Word, Access and Excel), with an aptitude to learn bespoke systems
