The primary role of the Maternity Support Worker (MSW) is to assist, support and work in collaboration with the midwife and the wider multidisciplinary team; in order to provide a safe and holistic approach to women centred care.

The midwife is ultimately responsible for the care of the mother and her new-born(s), and it is under the direct or indirect supervision of the midwife that the MSW assists with and provides clinical care following completion of any relevant or appropriate training.

The Mental Health MSW will assist mothers with perinatal mental health conditions to care for their babies, ensure that emotional / physical needs of babies are met and engage parents in activities to promote the mother-infant relationship.

Understand the stages of infant development and assist where difficulties are identified and empower families to be confident in their parenting.

Work as part of the multi-disciplinary team, utilising skills and knowledge to support and advise mothers and other staff across all domains of caring for babies.
- Assist with group sessions promoting antenatal education / emotional well-being
- Maintain accurate records and database of care provided to enable audit and evaluation of the service
- Assist in specialist clinics
- Participate in MDT team meetings

The post holder is expected to undertake a set of defined competencies. Support will be given to employees to further develop their skills and explore pathways for progression.
