**Job summary**:

- You will be involved in a range of historic environment
- casework, primarily providing advice concerning strategic
- spatial plans and development proposals affecting various
- aspects of the historic environment. You will play a key
- role in securing positive benefits for the historic
- environment and help decision makers to strike the right
- balance between development and the protection of
- Scotland’s significant historic sites and places. This will
- include responding to consultations from the development
- community and their agents, local authorities and other
- public bodies and supporting the work of senior officers
- on a variety of complex cases.**Job description**:
You will play a key role in the team and will have the opportunity to be involved a wide variety
of cases that present a range of opportunities and challenges for our heritage.

You will be responsible for both managing your own caseload as well as triaging new cases
and maintaining an overview of the work of the team.

You will be enthusiastic and committed to the delivery of our duties to a high standard.

You will be familiar with heritage management approaches, and/or development
planning/management procedures and may have some experience in their practical

Specialist knowledge of the historic environment itself is not vital and training will be provided.
But you should have good analytical skills and a broad understanding of how the planning
system can assist Historic Environment Scotland in delivering its responsibilities for the care,
protection and management of our heritage.#

You will take a risk-based approach to your work and have the ability to identify novel and
contentious development proposals.

You will have a strong project management approach to your work, and the ability to deliver
advice effectively within short timescales.

You will provide general advice internally and externally, including contributing to discussions
about the development of national-level policy and guidance for the historic environment.

You will have good interpersonal skills, and the ability to negotiate to enable better solutions
for the historic environment.

You would be expected to be flexible and available to travel to meetings and site visits
throughout Scotland as required.
- Specific tasks will include:
- Managing a variety of cases and providing advice on a range of heritage assets
- through the EIA process and strategic plans for future development.- Undertaking site visits, meetings, and a range of historic environment outreach work

with local authorities, public bodies, developers and other stakeholders, and the
- public.- Triaging consultations and other requests for advice reaching the team and assessing

the level of input that may be required.- Supporting Senior Environmental Assessment and Advice Officers and other

colleagues on high profile, novel and contentious cases.- Supporting colleagues across the Planning, Consents and Advice Service and

colleagues across HES with advice on planning and managing change in the historic
- environment.- Sharing your views on policies and guidance for managing the historic environment,

and contributing your ideas e.g. on revisions to managing change guidance, national
- policy conversations and the creation of case studies.- Keeping up-to-date with issues and developments in the planning system and for

heritage management.**Person specification**:

- Essential requirements:
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong analytical skills
- The ability to interpret wide-ranging information quickly and identify priorities
- Experience working on projects involving multiple individuals and workloads, and

managing timescales and contributions- Knowledge of ongoing and upcoming issues for the historic environment and planning

sectors- Experience in historic environment sector, town planning or environmental specialism
- Strong organisational and planning skills with the ability to prioritise competing

demands- Understanding of historic environment legislation, policy and guidance

Desirable requirements:
- Experience of Environmental Impact Assessment and Strategic Environmental

Assessment legislation and procedures- Experience working within a spatial planning context
- Experience working with Geographic Information Systems
- Experience of working successfully with the public or other stakeholders in relation to

heritage management- Qualifications and professional memberships:
