**Job Purpose** AGRI-DRY aims to bring about a significant reorientation of European and African doctoral training in traditional agriculture. The change will involve both substance and approach. The substance is the strong focus on rigorous techniques for interdisciplinary research. The approach is the emphasis on both research and applicative work, through the participation of both academic and advocacy and policy-making institutions. AGRI-DRY represents a unique opportunity for young researchers to enjoy a wide array of training opportunities that will be competitive with the best programmes offered outside Europe.
We draw attention to the special mobility conditions for Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Networks posts, which may be found at the bottom of this advert. Please note that applicants must register for a PhD and applicants should not already be in possession of a doctoral degree at the date of the recruitment.
**Doctoral Project Details**
This project will build upon publicly available palaeoecological datasets available from Mediterranean Europe and southern Africa to examine changes in land cover and impacts of early farming communities upon existing landscape structure and biodiversity. Using Bayesian chronologies, the landscape palaeoecological record will be linked to existing and developing crop assemblage data from the literature, work of other AGRI-DRY researchers (DCs 3 and 4) to establish effects of subsistence practices upon the landscape and its biodiversity, and understand how land cover varied across space and time and in response to changing agricultural practices. New palaeoecological data (pollen, charcoal) will be generated as needed based on an initial synthesis of the data and identification of research gaps, working alongside colleagues in South Africa (Project Partner NWU). Reconstruction of pollen-inferred land cover changes will use appropriate modelling techniques, some of which may need additional development. The quantification of land cover changes is especially challenging due to the variety of pollen productivity and dispersal mechanisms of tropical plant species which makes reconstructing land cover change especially difficult in these environments; several recent studies in southern Africa and Cameroon offer encouraging ways forward.
**Main Duties and Responsibilities**
1. To take personal leadership of establishing how changes in land cover and impacts of early farming communities affect landscape structure and biodiversity for southern Africa and Mediterranean Europe.
3. To reconstruct pollen-inferred land cover changes using appropriate modelling techniques
4. To keep up-to-date with the state-of-the-art in the research topic as required by the over-arching requirements of the project.
5. To contribute to research papers, present reports at group meetings, and give internal seminars, as well as talks and posters at national and international meetings to maintain University recognition and enhance the research profile of the group.
6. Develop a detailed research plan for the proposed project with your supervisor and maintain progress towards its achievement, and conduct assigned research to a high ethical standard
7. Document research output, including analysis and interpretation of all data, maintaining appropriate records and databases.
8. Collaborate with colleagues across the research group and wider network.
9. Keep up to date with current knowledge, research literature and recent advances in the field/discipline.
10. To train in areas relevant to the Marie Curie Research Programme.
11. To contribute to University research-related activities and research-related administration.
12. Engage in personal, professional and career development to enhance both specialist and transferrable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory and career plan
13. Undertake any other duties of equivalent standing as assigned by the Head of School and/or PI.
