Liverpool, United Kingdom University of Liverpool Maths School Full time

**What is ULMaS?**

The University of Liverpool Mathematics School is a state funded 16-19 Specialist Mathematics School. We are a Single Academy Trust sponsored by the University of Liverpool and also supported by industrial partners and generous donors.

We provide a challenging but highly supportive educational environment for some of the keenest and most talented mathematical and scientific students in the North West of England. Equally importantly, we run an outreach programme to support local schools and students, removing barriers to higher education for the most disadvantaged students.

**What are we looking for?**

**We want to strengthen the support we provide for our students by recruiting a professional counsellor with an appropriate level of training and experience to support students dealing with the challenges of growing up.**

**Context**

Our 16-19 year old students are intelligent young people going through a period of rapid cognitive and neural development. Our school includes a number of high functioning autistic people, people with difficult home lives and people with anxiety linked to such things as social situations, examinations, career decisions, relationships and identity. Our students tend to be very reflective and tenacious in their search for answers. This is a great strength in mathematics and science, but can also become problematic in the context of our personal lives and introspective analysis. As enthusiastic researchers and problem solvers they will seek answers to their own questions: they would benefit from having a wise counsellor to help them to find correct and useful information, manage their self-talk positively, and interpret their feelings constructively.

In the first two years of the school’s life we have benefitted from the support of the University of Liverpool Counselling Service and independent counsellors, and also ensured that our teachers and administrators are able to support students by providing training and support in mental health, neurodiversity and safeguarding. The school is growing steadily and in a strong position financially, so we are now in a position to recruit a specialist to further the high quality of pastoral support we provide. We also want to give staff members direct access to professional advice to help them to be even more effective in the way they support our students.

This is an opportunity for a qualified counsellor with an interest in social mobility, academically able students, and the challenges that young people face, to work at a small sixth form on a university campus.

We seek a colleague who wants to make a difference to educational opportunities for talented and sometimes disadvantaged students, supporting some fascinating and neurodiverse students whilst also playing a role in developing the scientific revolutionaries who may someday change the world.

This role will include tasks such as these:

- To work as a member of the school’s pastoral team supporting the wellbeing and personal development of our enrolled students and those engaged in our outreach programme;
- To deliver counselling, coaching and mentoring support for students on an individual and group basis;
- To deliver workshops for students in small groups;
- To help students to reach their educational and personal potential by assisting in their development as self managers, effective students and confident young citizens;
- To support consultation and training for staff regarding the welfare and support of all students;
- To actively contribute to professional development within the school and to participate in staff team meetings;
- To contribute to the excellent learning experience for our students by being a core member of our happy and close knit community;

**Job Types**: Full-time, Part-time, Permanent

**Salary**: £34,128.00-£37,000.00 per year

Schedule:

- Monday to Friday
