Accountancy Assistant

I am working with a Public Sector Organisation based in Hertsmere who are looking for an Accountancy Assistant for 6 Months Initially.
The role is full time, to start ASAP and paying £14.95 PAYE per hour.
Job Purpose
- Responsible for the identification and processing of all financial transactions undertaken by the Authority. Analyse the authority's bank statements and carry out a daily bank reconciliation. Process unidentified payments and post to the correct funds.
- Collate all paperwork relating to procurement card purchases and process for payment.
- Process all card transaction refunds within five working days.
Duties and responsibilities
- Correctly identify all transactions that appear on the Council's bank statements (all debit and credit transactions). Allocate all transactions to the appropriate systems within the Authority's financial framework (council tax, housing benefit, business rates, sundry debtors and creditors, treasury deposits and repayments) and prepare all appropriate internal supporting documentation to ensure correct financial control and audit trail are maintained.
- Undertake a daily bank reconciliation by reconciling the bank accounts to the general ledger. At the end of each month produce a month end reconciliation of bank accounts to general ledger.
- Respond to all enquiries from both our internal and external auditors throughout the year on ad-hoc systems audits.
- Collate all information related to procurement cards (statements, logs and receipts) and process for payment.
- Process all card refunds within five working days mainly in relation to council tax, planning, parking, land charges and waste services.
- Safeguard children, young people and adults at risk and make referrals to the appropriate agency.
Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of banking procedures
- Knowledge of the importance of maintaining confidentiality
- Computer literate in a variety of software for data handling and transmission
- Knowledge of Political and Democratic context in which the Council operates.
- Builds effective, supportive working relationships
- Demonstrates a flexible approach to work
- Contributes positively within a team environment
- Willing to learn and assist other team members
Experience and Qualifications
- Must be educated to at least GCSE (or equivalent) standard, including English and Maths.
- Demonstrable experience working in a financial services environment.
- Experience of completing financial control reconciliations.
- Experience and understanding of the fundamentals of bookkeeping and double entry records.
