We are looking to appoint a position of Locum Microbiology Consultant at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire NHS Trust. This will be 6 months with a possibility of extending for up to 1 year.

The post-holder will share in the provision of a first-class clinical microbiology service to the areas covered by the laboratory, along with the other three Consultant Microbiologists: Dr Jean O’Driscoll and Dr Ruby Devi and Dr Karthiga Sithamparanathan.

The Department also has an ST3 Microbiology/Infectious Diseases trainee from the Oxford Thames Valley deanery rotation working Mon-Fri 9-5pm.

You will participate in a 1 in 4 weekly on call-rota with prospective cover. Category A on call supplement applies.

The post is covered by the Terms and Conditions of the new Consultant Contract (England 2003).

The appointee will be expected to cover for colleagues’ absence from duty on the basis of agreed arrangements in the department and with the employing Trust.

You will be one of 4 consultants working in a rota to provide clinical support to all hospital sites and local GPs. This includes supporting our OPAT team to manage patients in the community, including weekly virtual OPAT rounds -when covering OPAT, attending orthopaedic, Spinal Surgery, Spinal Injuries and Haematology MDT meetings and undertaking daily ICU ward rounds.

Although based at the Stoke Mandeville Hospital site, you may be required to visit other Trust sites, particularly in your role as Lead Infection Control Doctor.

Key Tasks (General)

Provision of a comprehensive clinical medical microbiology service including:
Advice regarding appropriate specimens

Involvement in specimen analysis

Validation and interpretation of results for transmission to ward doctors and general practitioners

Involvement in the management of individual patients through full clinical liaison and ward visits.

Contributing to postgraduate and continuing medical education (including the Trust Grand rounds every Term and other activities locally and nationally, where required.

Participation in medical audit and quality assurance and control within the laboratory and clinically.

Responsibility for achieving and maintaining full ISO accreditation with UKAS Ltd.

Business planning, including the assessment and introduction of new methods, and forward planning for staff and equipment requirements.

Participation in a recognised scheme of Continuing Professional Development. Funding and study leave is available for agreed purposes.

Participation in clinical governance and other quality activities as relevant.
