**Job summary**:
The first duty of the government is to keep citizens safe and the country secure. The Home Office has been at the front line of this effort since 1782. As such, we play a fundamental role in maintaining the security and economic prosperity of the UK.

The Home Office leads on immigration and passports, refugee protection, counter-terrorism, policing, fire services, and crime and drugs policy.

The Parliamentary Team is an inclusive, supportive team based in the Home Office’s Private Office. It is responsible for planning and shaping the Home Office’s engagement with Parliament. The team shapes ministerial engagement with Parliament, working across all areas of the Home Office. This requires extensive cross-Whitehall liaison to make sure that we are engaging with our counterparts in each Department.

**Job description**:
Two roles in the Parliamentary Team are available - both excellent opportunities to cover high profile and fast-moving work with Ministerial attention and interest from Parliament. The roles provide an excellent opportunity to hone parliamentary handling skills in a high-profile environment.

The post holders will each play a key role in ensuring that the Home Office is meeting Parliamentary and No10 deadlines. The roles will need someone able to prioritise work and to respond to changing deadlines.

**Role 1**:
You will be responsible for ensuring that Parliamentary Questions received by the Home Office are being drafted by officials and receiving timely clearance from both Special Advisers and Ministers.

In addition, you will also be expected to assist with a range of other parliamentary work as required including:

- Assisting with allocating and answering Parliamentary Questions
- Preparation for Ministers’ appearances at Home Office Oral Questions (preparing and quality assuring briefing, printing, flagging, etc.);
- Leading on providing information and advice on All Party Parliamentary Groups;
- Assisting with Parliamentary outreach and training to the wider Home Office;
- Leading on managing relations with the Home Office Whips and Parliamentary Private Secretaries.

Other ad hoc tasks to support the wider Parliamentary and Legislative teams will be required where needed, with support from colleagues.

**Role 2**:
As well as this, you will lead on commissioning and responding to briefing requests from No10, ensuring the Prime Minister has the most up to date lines for use at PMQs and media appearances amongst other queries.

Other ad hoc tasks to support the wider Parliamentary and Legislative teams will be required where needed, with support from colleagues.

This is an exciting time for both roles with Ministerial evidence sessions with the Home Affairs Select Committee in the pipeline, and the whole Ministerial team due to be answering Home Office Oral Questions from Parliament in the upcoming weeks and months.

Due to business requirements, these roles are full time only.

Hybrid working: Hybrid working enables employees to work partly in their workplace(s) and partly at home. A hybrid working pattern may be available, where business needs allow. Applicants can discuss what this means with the vacancy holder if they have specific questions.

**Person specification**:
You will need to be:

- confident working under pressure, confident making independent decisions and calm in addressing Ministers and senior officials. An understanding of working with Parliamentary procedure is critical, however further support will be provided.
- a well-organised individual with excellent communication skills (both written and oral).
- good at establishing relationships, building a new area of work and working as part of a team.

**Essential criteria**

These are a mix of new and current roles. We are looking for motivated individuals who can demonstrate:

- Strong organisation and communication skills;
- The ability to handle a heavy workload and prioritise effectively;
- Excellent written skills or experience of quality assuring briefing.

**Behaviours**:
We'll assess you against these behaviours during the selection process:

- Working Together
- Delivering at Pace
- Making Effective Decisions
- Seeing the Big Picture
- Working Together

**Benefits**:

- Learning and development tailored to your role
- An environment with flexible working options
- A culture encouraging inclusion and diversity
- A Civil Service pension with an average employer contribution of 27%
