Demonstrate commitment to IWL principles and flexible working patterns, to meet the needs of the service and staff Tackle discrimination and harassment, and promote equality and diversity in the workplace Reduce sickness absence; work place accidents; and promote zero tolerance on violence against staff Take responsibility for personal development and education and the development of a Personal Development Plan. Provide expert knowledge of lung cancer and its management leading to the accurate assessment and logical planning/implementation of patient-centred care. Co-ordinate complex case management, adjusting plans or strategies as necessary thus maintaining patient centred care. Anticipation of the physical, psychological and social issues relevant to individual patients, resulting in expert and timely guidance.
Working autonomously ensuring fulfillment of the health education, disease/treatment-related and psycho-social needs of patients and carers. Providing patient advocacy throughout the lung cancer pathway, extending such advocacy as a cornerstone of policy/protocol development. Communication of highly emotive and sensitive information to patients and their relatives using developed interpersonal/communication skills to ensure that all acceptance barriers are overcome. In specific circumstances, to undertake the responsibility for informing patients and relatives of a diagnosis of terminal illness in highly distressing and emotional situations.
Provide patient-focused advice and the nursing perspective to all members of the MDT. Analysis and interpretation of complex clinical situations resulting in effective communication within the MDT, maximising each members input into clinical decision making. Maintain effective communication pathways between the MDT, primary care, Cancer Centre and other secondary and tertiary care settings. Contribute to the development of research based practice for the lung cancer service.
Implement relevant specialist training programmes to support innovations and development of nursing practice. Actively participate, promote and contribute to specialised local and national groups such as the North of England Lung Cancer Nurses Group. To act as an expert source of knowledge, to support Health Care professional in the management of lung cancer patients. To act as a highly developed specialist source of knowledge of nursing management of lung cancer patients which has been acquired through degree and postgraduate specialist training underpinned by relevant practical experience and theoretical knowledge.
Ensure working practice conforms to local and national standards of care which are evidence based as per evolving research studies and therefore contribute to the Trust wide quality assurance programme. Contribute to audit of patient satisfaction and participate in research studies and clinical trials within the field of lung cancer. Promote the lung cancer team as an example of good practice and share such practice with other lung cancer and site specific teams. Maintain accurate information for the lung cancer databases.
To continuously update and develop personal competencies in order to ensure high standards of care. To ensure compliance with UKCC Code of Professional Conduct. Influence, contribute to and implement the policies and procedures relevant to the development of the lung cancer service which impacts upon associated services and disciplines. Contribute to the Lung Cancer Peer Review process.
Network with all teams across the North of England strengthening nursing links with all Lung Cancer Nurses. Ensure effective Risk Management Assessment. Ensure effective use of own time, balancing the roles of practitioner, facilitator, caseload manager and educator. There will be many more aspects to this role as a Nurse Specialist, you will be expected to be flexible and able to cope with the demands of the post.
