An exciting opportunity has arisen with our McMillan Lung cancer team. We are looking for a dynamic member of staff to join our busy team.

The post holder will contribute to the continued development of the nursing service provision for lung cancer patients to ensure a high standard of evidence based practice. To act autonomously as circumstances demand, balancing such autonomy with the principles of true patient centered multi-disciplinary care. The focus of this post is to work as a member of the Macmillan Lung Cancer Nursing team acting as a key worker in the case management of suspected lung cancer patients from their first point of contact with the lung cancer team, through the investigative and diagnostic pathway and into the treatment/management phase of the disease.

Provide expert knowledge of lung cancer and its management leading to the accurate assessment and logical planning/implementation of patient-centered care.

Co-ordinate complex case management, adjusting plans or strategies as necessary thus maintaining patient centered care.

Anticipation of the physical, psychological and social issues relevant to individual patients, resulting in expert and timely guidance.

Working autonomously ensuring fulfillment of the health education, disease/treatment-related and psycho-social needs of patients and carers.

Providing patient advocacy throughout the lung cancer pathway, extending such advocacy as a cornerstone of policy/protocol development.

Communication of highly emotive and sensitive information to patients and their relatives using developed interpersonal/communication skills to ensure that all acceptance barriers are overcome.

In specific circumstances, to undertake the responsibility for informing patients and relatives of a diagnosis of terminal illness in highly distressing and emotional situations.

Maintain effective communication pathways between the MDT, primary care, Cancer Center and other secondary and tertiary care settings.

Contribute to the development of research based practice for the lung cancer service.

To continuously update and develop personal competencies in order to ensure high standards of care.
