Head of Corporate Affairs, Sse Distributed Energy
7 months ago
SSE has big ambitions to be a leading energy company in a low carbon world. It recently set out plans that could see the group invest up to £40bn in low carbon technology across the decade to 2031/32, with a fully funded £18bn five-year investment plan to 2027 - creating 1,000 green jobs a year. Your role will be to help ensure SSE can deliver the projects in which it wants to invest in its Distributed Energy division, as part of its ‘Net Zero Acceleration Programme Plus’.
We are looking for a Head of Corporate Affairs with the experience and passion to galvanise the growth potential of SSE’s Distributed Energy division. Acting as a business partner to the senior leaders within the business and working closely with colleagues across the wider Group Corporate Affairs function, the role involves overseeing the communications, policy, public affairs, and stakeholder engagement required to help this exciting part of SSE realise its growth potential. We’re looking for someone who wants to be directly involved in a company that is directly powering change towards net zero.
**About the role**
**Base location**: Flexible across the UK, but travel may be required to London, Perth and other key locations in England and Scotland.
**Salary**: £61,100 - £91,700 depending on skills and experience + annual bonus + a range of other benefits to support your family, finances and wellbeing.
**Working pattern**: Permanent | Full Time | Flexible Working options available
We are looking to recruit a highly motivated and energetic Head of Corporate Affairs, who will inspire and inform our stakeholders on how we, at SSE, are driving the transition to a net zero future and building a better world of energy for tomorrow. This role will effectively create, deliver, and oversee communications, policy and public affairs plans that help create the conditions required for growth in this dynamic part of SSE
- You will be operating at a strategic advisory level and will need to be hands-on and able to execute given the immediate team is relatively small, consisting of this role and a Policy and Public Affairs Manager.
- The team operates as part of a matrix structure so a collaborative and collegiate approach is essential, both to maximise impact and to ensure coordination with the efforts and priorities of the wider SSE Group.
- You will work alongside sector directors for areas such as EV infrastructure and Heat Networks, and your job will be to help them grow their presence and deliver on their key strategic objectives. You will also work alongside colleagues in marketing to enhance the reputation of the business.
- You will be advising senior business leaders and earn your place as a trusted boardroom presence. You will be capable of understanding, interpreting and proactively influencing a fast-moving policy environment, as well as managing reputational and stakeholder issues that arise from a business with plenty of exciting distributed energy projects across the country.
- This will see you managing interactions with policy decision-makers, trade associations, government officials, and media - in close dialogue with Group colleagues.
**What do I need?**
SSE’s Corporate Affairs function prides itself on its ability to advise, influence and communicate effectively to support delivery of the company’s strategic objectives. You will need to be able to take initiative and enjoy working autonomously, managing your own work and outputs, whilst ensuring coordination and integration with the wider business unit and SSE Group Corporate Affairs teams.
To be considered for the role, we would love for you to have:
- Experience of establishing and developing relationships with key stakeholders across government, third sector organisations and media. You will also have an aptitude for policy and public affairs ideally in the energy sector but we welcome applicants from other fields who can bring across transferable skills
- An ability to understand and influence legislation and policy frameworks that can directly impact the business unit’s existing operations and growth potential - for example Heat Networks. You will also have an ability to advocate effectively to ensure both SSE’s and its customers’ interests are protected and enhanced in the development and implementation of government policy.
- The ability to operate confidently at all levels of the organisation, providing advice to colleagues including senior management. This will support building trusted relationships with partners and stakeholders, using influencing skills to effectively manage conflict and broker solutions.
- The ability to develop and oversee communications content with tailored messaging aimed at segmented audiences. This includes overseeing accurate content for a range of external and internal channels, as well as presentations, speeches, and scripts. Ideally you will be social and digital media savvy and comfortable in today’s evolving
